Back in the day the Cotton Bowl was one of the big New Year's Day bowl games: Cotton, Rose, Orange and Sugar. If this happens, it will be back where it belongs amongst the big time!

The reason they went 4+1 rather than add a 5th (obviously also not to spread the wealth), was because they went back to "traditional" bowl / conference affiliations. Ex: Big10/Pac10 stays Rose, SEC to Sugar, etc.

If they would have added a 5th rotating National champ bowl, then they necessarily would have really messed that up. If every one will recall, the attendance was becoming abhorrent due to the lack of knowing where your team might end up in the selection process.

This way, you know upon winning your conf champ that you are headed to the x bowl, unless you are 1/2
