Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?I don't know how much longer you all can hang on to the argument of "GP and his staff just evaluate talent better than everybody else and can move people to other spots" Aren't you all ranked like 25 or 26 with this Class?
But for me, the one thing that Patterson and his staff do very well is player development. NFL players is one byproduct. With all due respect to those who may not value it as they should, You do need to coach them up in order to get the best out of them and put them in places where they can succeed. It's great when they get on your campus. What are you going to do with them while they are there? TCU does a very good job that. Everbody rips Mack Brown for his inability to develop the talent.
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?
You forgot the Ted Tolner and John Robinson second time round eras as well! And the answer is... NO SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

ONetrick, please interpret this post for the rest of us.
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?I don't see Patterson going to Michigan. I think he wants to get into the Big East and try to win a national championship at TCU.
"McIlhenny. . .McIlhenny to the 5. . .McIlhenny. . .Touchdown! Touchdown for SMU!"
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?Harbaugh: Right now Stanford is a better job than Michigan. Harbaugh is getting really good talent that fits his systems. Michigan is at least 3 recruiting classes from fixing it's defense. Especially if they change systems. But the heart wants what the heart wants. If that is the position he covets then he will take a run at it.
GP: He would be really successful there. The man is an obnoxious schmuck, but he is a tremendous teacher of the game. Again it will take 3 or 4 recruiting classes to get his guys in place. At TCU he will go to a BCS Bowl next year. At Michigan he won't for several years. Peterson: He would also be really successful at Michigan. Now that TCU is in the Big East it would make a lot of sense to take a run at it. The MWC without BYU, Utah, and TCU is not going to get AQ status anytime soon. Les Miles: I understand why he stayed at LSU the last time. Your recruiting territory is all along the gulf coast (from Florida to Texas). He has plenty of "Travel & Liesure" type majors there to keep kids academically eligible. He is now taking a lot of heat from his boosters - it might be a good time for him to step out. What would happen at Michigan though with his anemic offense and 3 recruiting classes away from a solid defense? He will be asking Rich Rod for a job. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?
While that's true, you can make the case that North Carolina was a better job than Texas in 1998 when Mack Brown got there. But Brown understood the history and the tradition at Texas. North Carolina didn't have the potential Texas has. Same thing with Stanford vs. Michigan. The Cardinal has produced a Heisman Trophy winner in Jim Plunkett and John Elway. And the Cardinal just went to its first BCS game. But overall, Stanford is NOT a better job than Michigan. Stanford does not have the potential Michigan does. Yes, it could take 3 recruiting years because the Michigan defense is a mess. But there is such a thing of getting your kids to play and being organized. Among all things, that's what Rodriguez's biggest problem was. (As an aside, I think Jones does a good job with that, except the bowl game.) Watching the Gator Bowl, I remember Craig James ripping the Michigan coaching staff because of a personnel issue = a kid was late getting on to the field and Michigan either had to burn a timeout or something like that. Can you win a national championship at Michigan? Yes. Can you win a national championship at Stanford? IMO, this was the best shot the Cardinal had at it, and it died in Eugene. Stanford is NOT job Michigan is.
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?
When SMU has the caliber of players (overall) that TCU has on its team - we can play that style. After watching some of the better teams in bowl games, we look like Boy Scouts, in comparison. We're upgrading our personnel - but, as TCU experienced, it takes a little time.
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?
Yes, you can win a National Championship from Stanford. Their only loss this season was at Oregon, who is playing for a National Championship. Would it be harder to win it at Stanford compared to Michigan... Yes. Some of that is because of location. More Voters see Big Ten games than Pac 10 games. Harbaugh could create a dynasty at Michigan and again make it one of the coveted jobs in the country. He has re-energized Stanford and could do the same at Michigan. Today, however, Stanford is the better job. Mack Brown going to Texas is not really a good comparison. UNC has always been a basketball first school. UNC didn't make an effort to rebuild their football program after he left until they hired Butch Davis. Texas (the State) sends more kids to FBS schools every year than any other state (Florida (2) California (3) PA (4)). Leaving a basketball school and walking into the best recruiting grounds in the nation is not what Harbaugh would be doing. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?I agreed with you that Stanford today is better than Michigan. Not overall.
I think UNC is absolutely fair. Prior to Harbaugh's arrival, what was Stanford known for in sports. It was good in men's and women's BB, baseball was solid, non-revenue sports were good. Football was respectable. UNC can play a little baseball (you just don't hear about it). UNC women's and men's soccer are outstanding. You can recruit to Michigan. I don't know what you're speaking of. Not being combative. Just help me understand your point. What happens to Stanford football after Harbaugh/Luck leave. Can the next coach sustain what Harbaugh started?
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?
Brandon let RichRod twist in the wind because his buyout would have been $4 million instead of $2.5 million if Brandon had let him go before Jan. 1.
Re: Rummor: Patterson to Michigan?Stanford is NOT going to win a NC anytime soon,
They only beat a depleted USC by two points on a no time left FG due to Monte Kiffins pathetic excuse for a D. Next year they are in the same division as Oregon and will be hard pressed to win the division much less the Pac-12 Championship Game. I do not believe USC can play in the Championship Game even if undefeated which is probably unlikely due to the scholarship limits affecting the depth overall. I have to agree from a purely Football POV that indeed Michigan is royalty while Stanford can barely attract 40,000 to their reduced to 50,000 capacity stadium. Stanford has three FB goals every year and they consist of beating Cal, UCLA, and USC! Anymore is just gravy! SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Wonder how they convinced Luck to stay, then... Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
