Post Season BBall and FBall

Postby Treadway21 » Thu Mar 17, 2011 4:17 pm

For all you young whippersnappers who have only know failure in our revenue sports, I was trying to remember the last time SMU Football and Basketball both played in the post season at the same time. According to my research, it was either the 1984 calendar year when we lost to Ewing and Georgetown in the second round of the NCAA in 1984 (Georgetown won it all in 1984) and the football team won the Aloha Bowl in December of 1984 against Notre Dame. Or was it the 1984 football season and the 1984/85 basketball season when we beat Old Diminion and lost to Loyola of Chicago. Either way 1984 was the year.

Been a long time since we've had success in football and basketball. Even though this year's accomplishment is not as significant since more teams make the post season in both sports, it is still quite an achievement. Let's all be thankful; SMU is making progress.

Can we just end the argument agreeing that both football and basketball are much better off than they were 5 years ago? In the words of Jeff Reinebold, we are not where we want to be but we are certainly better than where we were.

This post was unrelated to FB/BB argument in other threads. I was in school at that time and just took it for granted that we would always be good at both. I did not realize how lucky I was to be in school at time of such success and how difficult it was getting back.

Speaking of Reinebold - saw him at the game last night. Great to have a guy like that with the program.
