Depends. Memphis can be hit-and-miss, and the area around the Liberty Bowl is a little shady, but there are some decent hotels.

If your trying to stay somewhere fun, the local favorite is The Peabody. Downtown, near Beale, etc:
http://www.peabodymemphis.com/

Their is a small boutique hotel, also in downtown, the Madison:

Standard Hilton, little out of the way from the game:
http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/M ... e/index.do

The University of Memphis has a Holiday Inn as part of their school, donated by the founder of the company. Average priced, fine for a family, easy to get to the LB from:
http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/ ... oteldetail

Closer towards the game I will have restaurants and bars.

Have stayed at both the Peabody and Madison. Both are safe and close to Beale. Don't know if one has a deal better than the other. The Peabody will have more extravagant amenities. Either was just fine by me though I appreciated the small quaint atmosphere (and more Nouveaux) of the Madison.

For those coming into LR, I haven't confirmed my plans but if I drive I will have room for 2 or 3 others. And I onced lived in Memphis so do have knowledge of how to get there and get out.

And FWIW, I attended the game in Memphis the last time we played there. The fans are extremely nice and very appreciative of the few of us the made the trip. This could possible be a very pleasant trip (nice city and courteous fans).

Thanks for the comment. My main concern about going to the A&M game is the A&M fans. I don't need to be covering my 8-year old the whole game to screen him from the cattle ranchers.

A&M is less of a red flag for the young ones than Tech. Biggest downers at A&M are the aggy cannon and the heat. I only mention the cannon because I can still hear it booming from the last time we were down there.

Of all of our away games the last four years or so, about the only one I won't take the young RGVs to is Tech.

Thanks RGV. I have been warned about Tech (but the confirm is good). It's so funny. He gets so excited about the Ponies. Although, my job this year is to get him to stop calling touchdowns "homeruns". :D[/quote]
Sounds like he needs to hang out w/ my youngest (also 8)

RGV:

I assume since you come to Little Rock a lot that you have been to the Capitol Hotel since the $25,000,000 renovation. I have not seen it since it was finished but it is supposed to be very nice. The doormen keep turning me away.

I've been there twice in '11...stayed at the Peabody but ventured across the street both times. Each time at check-in, it was something straight of a movie...."checking for two nights? well...youd best get out of town before the storm hits..." Looking across the river at a lightning show is pretty cool, though.

Anyway, the Capitol is impressive just walking in...the restaurant manager (I think) is dressed in a southern gentleman's suit, light gray or blue with a bow tie...part of the 'scene' I guess. Also of note: they have a great menu, but if it's a burger someone's after, two words: homemade bacon.

I'm looking forward to an uneventful couple of days there at some point, which will (hopefully) include lunch at the storied Whole Hog.

Capitol is supposed to have a chocolate french toast that is amazing. I had my parent's 60th wedding anniversary there but it was before the renovation. It was already nice so I assume even better now.

Funny because when I was in high school it is where the kids would go and slip a few bucks to a bell hop and they could get a room and a hooker for a while. People that had offices in buildings near by in those days said they could look out their windows and see the "hooking" going on in the adjacent rooms.

MEMPHIS TRIP

Postby NickSMU17 » Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:33 am

The capital is in my top 3 favorite hotels I have ever stayed at. Great value, amazing service, and the food is amazing. Room service breakfast is a real treat.

I was supposed to stay in October form my wife's 10 yr from PA, but I think the hogs are playing in lr that weekend and the hotel has been booked since the schedule came out.
