The new guy is young, energetic and is selling hope to recruits. At the very least they'll still get to play SEC football and get a world-class education even if the wins are scarce.

What nobody ever mentions about the athletes at Vanderbilt is that very few of them actually attend Vanderbilt University. Most of them attend the George Peabody College for Teachers which is affiliated with Vanderbilt. They don't receive a Vanderbilt Diploma. So this guy is selling hope and energy. To the few, he is also selling the academics.

Since 1979, this has been incorrect. That year, the George Peabody College for Teachers was almost out of money and had to negotiate a full merger with Vanderbilt. Peabody still has a lot of education majors available for athletes, and a lot of athletes still go there, but they now have to negotiate Vandy's common curriculum and they do receive a Vandy diploma.

You are correct. Vanderbilt Peabody College of Education and Human Development is a school within Vanderbilt University, just as Dedman is at SMU. Vandy is a great school and the best degree you can get within the SEC. If you aspire to more than football, the Commodores are a great choice, just as Stanford, Duke and Northwestern are great destinations for a student athlete.

SI joins in on Vanderbilt Advantage?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/w ... =cf_bf3_a3

"According to the most recent five-year data compiled by the NCAA, Vandy graduated 81.5 percent of players within six years of enrollment. Ole Miss finished second at 53.5 percent."

"Like Jim Harbaugh at Stanford before him, Franklin has turned his school's sterling academic reputation into a recruiting tool. And while Franklin rarely points to The Associated Press rankings, he isn't shy about comparing the SEC schools side-by-side in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. "I know how this game goes," Franklin said. "Every school, you're going to leave there thinking they've got great academics. They don't. Go on US News and World Report and look it up yourself." Currently, Vanderbilt stands at No. 17. That's behind FBS brethren Stanford (No. 5), Duke (No. 9) and Northwestern (No. 12) but miles ahead of the next three SEC schools, which come it at No. 53 (Florida), No. 56 (Georgia) and No. 79 (Alabama)."

Vandy also got a commit from the #2 RB in nation (rivals) - four star Brian Kimbrow from Memphis. Chose Vandy over Tennessee.

I wouldn't want SMU to play them in the next few years unless in the Liberty Bowl. They will be tough.

Rather play Duke UVA or Northwestern...

If we are looking to be top #25, we can't shy away from anyone.

Anyone else seeing similarities between today's SEC and the last few years of the SWC. Struggles on top for national recognition. Various recruiting scandals starting to pop up. Lowly ranked private school all of a sudden getting big time recruits. We may just see Vandy in Thad's next production, Death Penalty II, starring Lionel Ritchie leading the Commodores. Then the top dogs will break off and be part of the new Super Conference.

#2 all purprose back in the nation..not #2 running back...nonetheless, an outstanding commit for vandy with offers from just about every big time program including bama, auburn, tenn, notre dame, arkansas, nebraska...

You are correct - just chatted with someone who watches Vandy recruiting closely - the guy they landed was the #2 all purpose back, #80 player in the country and had offers from 27 schools including Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Notre Dame, etc.

I am not saying we should shy away from playing anyone - but I would rather not play a school that has been the definition of awful football and cellar dweller for 29 of the last 30 years (this is why others will not want to play us).

Beating Vandy would not mean much to most and losing to them would not look good.

Beating a team like UVA or Ole Miss would mean a lot more and a loss would not look that awful.

Evidently he has not yet decided...

I don't have access - but this does not sound like a solid verbal:

http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiti ... on-lane-jr

Miami three-star wideout Elston Lane's pledge to Vandy on hold

Class of 2012 wide receiver Elston Lane of Miami Northwestern HS (Miami, Fla.), has had his announced commitment to Vanderbilt...
