So rivals wrote a story that says "we ranked these guys really low, but they turned out to be studs."

Way to point out the value of rankings done by people who aren't coaches or scouts.

I don't think this reflects poorly on them at all..it is pretty common knowledge that every single recruiting rating service, every single coach, every single scout misses on players...all the time...its an art not a science.

And don't forget the coaches that have the ability to "coach up".

If a player selects the right school, with the right coaches, and the right playing conditions, his true playing ability can be higher than the scout service rankings.

And on the flip side, the opposite can be true. How many player are ranked 3+ stars and never pan out at the college level?

This is why it is so important for a high school player to truly analysis the school, coaches, program, etc. A lot of pressure for an 18 year old.

Sanders was rated as a 4.9, which (it has been mentioned here) means that there was not enough information to give an informed ranking. Everyone who signs is given at least a 2 star rating on signing day. I don't find it unreasonable that they cannot accurately assess EVERY SIGNEE in the nation. I also don't think this was an article saying "Man, we don't have a clue what we're doing".

in 2011 there were about 1851 2 stars and about 32 5 stars. That means there were about 60 times more 2 stars.

bottom line is these kids are teenagers when labeled with their "stars". Easier to spot physical talent and success as the H.S. level than what these guys will become. College offers lots of distractions and there are plenty of talented guys who roll thru H.S unscathed...but how will they respond to that 1st injury or life away from home. Will they show the dedication to stay on top?

I think we would all agree it would be nice to have a roster of 4 and 5 star guys and complain about the guys who didn't pan out rather than bragging about the few 2 stars that surprised.

I'd say roughly 1/2 to 2/3 of the 5 stars went on to get drafted. Not sure how many made it through camp, though.

Not including 2008-2010 as these kids are generally still in school.

2007: 15 drafted. 8 still in school. 6 not drafted
2006: 18 drafted, 9 not drafted
2005: 13 drafted, 15 not drafted
2004: 11 drafted, 14 not drafted
2003: 13 drafted, 12 not drafted
2002: 16 drafted, 21 not drafted

The not drafted includes those that had to quit football along the way, just didnt' have the talent to move to the next level, or went straight to prison. Some of these guys are playing in other professional leagues, though.

While my estimate of up to 2/3 getting drafted was high, it not that far out of line. Statistically, being a 5 star recruit, you have roughly a 50% chance of getting drafted into the NFL.

True - and the reason these guys have 5 stars has nothing to do with a Rivals assessment and everything to do with how many top colleges and coaches have an interest in the player. Stars and ratings are not predictive...they are reactive to the amount of interest (and offers) a player receives.
