What is/should UT doing/do?

Postby Water Pony » Mon Aug 15, 2011 11:49 am

It is hard to imagine the Longhorns being passive, while the Aggies and SEC do their dance. Leaving aside that the Longhorns helped create this situation and drive the Aggies away, what is UT doing at the moment? What should they be planning?

Do they ensure the Big12 survives and/or plan for independence sooner than later? Are they having discussions with OU on the next moves? Reinvent the Big12 as a smaller, but competitve conference or expand to 12 or 14 teams?

What is happening in Austin?

I've got to think that as long as they can be the top dog in the Big 12, they'll try to keep it together. And what choice does OU have, really? They attached at the hip with OSU, thus they're definitely not getting into the Big 10 and probably not the SEC either. With OU and Texas in the Big 12 now, the Red River Shootout could become a de facto playoff game for the national title every year.

The only thing at this point that could kill Texas' interest in keeping the Big 12 together would be a defection of Mizzou to the Big 10 or KU/KSU to the Big East, IMO

Some the Aggie board are suggesting that UT is everything they can behind closed doors to undermine their move to the SEC.

UT help destroy one conference and an entire program. No doubt UT is doing all it can to prevent A$M from bolting. However, if A$M and the SEC pul it off, UT becomes more isolated than ever.

The ESPN contract for the LHN delivers a big bag of cash to the Whorns, but it comes with some major baggage. UT is not as attractive to any major conference as long as much of the revenue from the UT brand will flow directly to UT through the LHN and not through any conference TV deal.

UT seems to be executing its plan of destablizing the Big 12 and its rivals while simultaneously building its own network to be the landing spot for a fully independent UT football program. Basketball & non-revenue sports will need a landing spot as well and the perfect place for this will be a emasculated Big 12 conference comprised of Baylor, Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, with BYU & Houston thrown in on top. OU, Kansas, and Kansas State are likely to get better deals elsewhere. The conference will need a few more bodies which will bedrawn from C-USA & MWC.

Texas main weekness as a program is that it is tied to the hip to Aggie & Tech. If I'm Texas, I'm lobying the state legislature to approve the Aggie to SEC deal in exchange for the operation severing itself from the Whorn's [deleted] Siamese twin Tech - with the plan of going indpendent in football and parking non-revenue sports in whatever the Big 12 morphs into.

I think Texas is working like hell to ensure that Mizzou doesn't defect along w/ A&M. They can make a go of it w/ 9 teams and if they feel compelled to make a move to get back to 10 they can do that too. The real question is whether or not they decide to take a small step w/ just one addition to the conference or be more bold and look for 3 teams to get back to the original 12.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Texas Tech's President has remained in close contact with UT all this time and says that the Big 12 is going to be proactive and expand this time.

"In the past we've sort of been reactive, I think the nine remaining members of the Big 12 have decided that the reactive behavior - it's time to get rid of that. It's time to be proactive and I think you'll see a very proactive approach... I think you ought to think of conference realignment with the Big 12 being one of the cornerstones."
