Win a big game to get people's attention and recruit's attention. Then you may have something.

Orsini is right to call out the fans. He also has to look at himself in the mirror and say how do we get our name out there.

When you have:

a limited media campaign

you don't sell your stuff all over the DFW area

when your administration is committed when it suits its purposes

These results are not surprising.

Exactly this. It's very underwhelming that SMU can't successfully market itself as THE Dallas university. THE Dallas college football team. When I'm in sports stores in local malls I even see gear for schools such as Houston before I see anything from SMU. We need to market the hell out of our product and things could change. The bottom line is that everyone on this forum is what I think of as an SMU insider. We're on the inside, we know the school or we know people in the school. We've already crossed a border which most people in Dallas haven't done. We need to have mass appeal so that people in the region will want to tune into our games and whenever they see a Mustangs hat they'll want to get it. It's happened with Texas, Tech, A&M, OU, and now TCU (strictly talking about the DFW area). It's long overdue for us to re-think our marketing and our branding strategy, especially in light of conference realignment.

True, and I think we are starting to try to market ourselves as The Dallas college football team and not just The Highland Park college football team. Coach Jones has been trying to do that but we do need to do ramp it up. Wins really help get the ball rolling more than anything.

You are delusional if you think that. HP is very well known, especially in football. Hell, it was even mentioned in Pony Excess

Well it is obvious that even SMU alums are confused.

SMU is located in University Park...not Highland Park.

Highland Park High School is also located in University Park...not Highland Park.

Now carry on. 8)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

A promo video like this one shows up it seems every year on youtube, and rarely if ever goes any farther than that (except occasionally it will get played on the jumbotron if you happen to go to a game). You don't even need a whole marketing division to do this stuff; some people are doing it for you. Take it and put it on every local TV station. Spend some of that new revenue buying a few spots leading up to each home game. You can't count on the Big 12 Morning News to consistently provide coverage, and the local stations won't do it unless you throw some $$$ their way. Maybe it draws people, maybe not, but at least you have a visible presence at not an enormous cost. Add to that a signature win or two to expand the conversation (and a handful of folks dragging people by their ears off the boulevard and into the stadium on game days) and things start heading in the right direction.

Actually, I think SMU's zip code is in Dallas. At any rate we need to move the marketing beyond the exclusive areas, which I think we are trying to do. But it is going to take time and wins IMO.

this years home schedule is terrible. Is A&M actually coming to Ford next year at least or have they begun the buyout process? Maybe they are waiting to see how Sept 4 goes and if we are a legit threat physically. Orsinis comments got some attention on Galloway (Espn radio) this evening but not in a good way. the commentators railed on us mostly. I think a broadcast email or something would have done more than a blog post. Bad PR.

Winning is THE answer, but someone ought to kick the DALLAS morning news in the rear or some rich alum buy the dam thing! They have been a cooperating partner in diminishing the SMU image. It's time for them to change tactics if they want a BCS team in their backyard for one of those "4 16 member leagues" (let's hope for 5-6 of them). The Austin paper has a front sports page story every day about their 5-7 team. Come on DMN - give SMU a break.
