Quarterbacks

Postby MustangFan » Wed Jan 16, 2002 6:24 pm

So David Page has moved on. Now the question is: who starts at QB?

Logic would suggest that the job is Luker's to lose. But when you have a new coaching staff, and a new offensive scheme being put in place, I'd think every job is up for grabs. Luker obviously has the experience. Bartel has the size and frame that coaches like, and he's a little more mobile. Nixon appears to be the most mobile, but I've never seen him throw. And Tate Wallis ran with the receivers and tight ends last year, so he's a mystery.

From what I've read, Bennett wants to install a spread offense with multiple sets, and including some option. If that's the case, we need a mobile quarterback.

So looking into my crystal ball, I'm betting Richard Bartel lines up under center against Navy in the season opener.

I haven't seen him play, but I was told Ashton has a great arm. He might have a good chance at the job.

Ashton has moved to receiver. The job is between Bartel and Luker, but I would not be suprised at all to see Tate Wallis be the sleeper in this group. It almost seems as if Luker has taken his last snap?

Glad to hear Donnie is hanging in there with us. Based upon what that froggie said on the other board about watching Donnie at their camp, it ought to make for an interesting competition for the QB position. I agree that the best thing will be for him to redshirt his freshman year...and then look out...things will get real interesting.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I agree with PK - glad Donnie's still around. Anxious to see him throw. I'm planning to get to at least three or four games in the fall.

At what point to we worry about the Cincinnati Reds telling Bartel to give up football entirely, since they're paying his way through school?

I agree. Brag away. This will be over before you know it. So, enjoy itwhile you can, as much as you can. We look forward to seeing him play.

Don't be so sure of Nixon moving to receiver....

Sccop: Another post cleared that up. I met him last weekend and he was introduced to me as a quarterback by coach Edmundson. Nuff said.

From what I hear around the football offices, we shouldn't be so quick to assume the job will go to Luker or Bartel. They'll compete, but I gather the coaches love Ashton Nixon, in part because he has the best mobility of the QBs, and in part because of how hard he's been working.
This competition will be wide-open. Can't wait for Spring Ball.
