Hi,
I am a high school Senior. And I am doing a research paper on the NCAA's Death Penalty. I would like to see a list of the signees from 1987, and see how the signees ended up in there life. The paper is going to over how unfair it is for SMU to have been the only school to have recieved the "Death Penalty", because other programs have done worse and were not recieved the consquents. So if any of ya'll have the list can you send me a copy? PLEASE????
And to let you all know I am looking foward to being a Mustang in the Fall of 2005.
Thanks,
X-press60 (ben)

Thanks Dallas!
It helps some, but what I am needing is a list from the 1987-1988 signees. There were a few guys that had signed with SMU, that year. But before there Sr. year was over SMU was handed the Death Penalty, and they had to find new schools. But hey this list will help too.
And oh yeah I'll be there BABY!!

I would recommend trying the Dallas Morning News Archives. I know at some point they did a story on the Death Penalty and I believe there was a section in that spread that had the list of the recruits and where they ended up.

I think the most interesting spin would be the Glieber kid. If memory serves me, which is very questionable, he was the one that stayed at SMU during the shut down and then played his Senior year on the first team back. Younger minds than mine can confirm or deny this.

Your right. Glieber did stay and play as a wide receiver for Gregg the year after we returned from the death penalty.

Helpful hint for your paper. It's "their" not there.

You might also look into interviewing/writing about Michael Bowen (who caught the winning touchdown in the "Miracle on Mockingbird"). He transferred to Georgia when football shut down, and transferred back when the program was re-born.

I believe there were two who stayed on, Glieber & Bowen, and another who transferred back from OU (can't recall his name...was an offensive lineman, I think), where he had transferred before the DP.
That was it. Everybody else was new to the program.
A little inside trivia:
OT Dan Moreman walked on that year...He happens to be the godfather to one of my boys...his dad played for SMU as well in 1966 w/ Levias...his mom was a cheerleader who got run over by Peruna on national TV. His dad coached Phil Bennett in high school ball, and he is credited by Coach Bennett with having been the reason Coach Bennett played football in the first place. The DC did an article that had comments to this effect when Bennett was hired.
Long history in all of this...some pretty cool stuff too.

Glieber and Brett Kershaw stayed. Bowen went to Georgia and came back. Tre Giller is the lineman who went to OU and then transferred back. None of those guys were signed in 1987, though. All of them were already on the team in 1986, the last year before the DP.
I dont remember us signing anyone in 1987, and if we did its going to boggle my mind. The penalty was handed down just 10 days after national signing day, and everyone knew it was comiing. Its hard to believe anybody signed to come here with that cloud over our heads. The way I remember it, we didnt have any scholarships to give that year, the NCAA took them away as part of the probation before the DP. Jon Hummel, Ben Hummels little brother, came to SMU without a scholaraship because the school promised to give him one when it was available, but he never played, and I think transferred to Nebraska. Not entirely sure about that, but that is the way I remember it.
Rolex was probably right, if we did sign anyone that year, the DMN archives are your best bet to find them.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
