UT/OU weekend

I graduated 32 years ago, when I was a student at SMU UT/OU weekend was a big event (I'm not from Texas) so it was a new experience for me. we walked around downtown Dallas with 1/2 the people giving hook 'em horns and the other with down hook 'em horns. the Police were HUGE with leather jackets and didn't tolerate any drunkenness. is this still the tradition? what does Dallas do to entertain all the UT/OU fans?

TX/OU weekend has drastically changed over the last decade or so.

A few years ago a young man was either stabbed or shot to death after an altercation while driving down Commerce Street in the big blowout party.

It seems as though the downtown TX/OU celebration was being taken over by hoodlums and gangs.

The TX/OU downtown celebration became more of a gathering place for high school thugs than for people actually associated with either of the football teams.

After the young man's death the city scaled back everything and decided it was becoming too dangerous.

There is still a party, over in the West End......but what goes on today is only a shadow of the old huge celebrations that happened the night before the TX/OU games.

Those nights in downtown Dallas in the '70's & '80's the night before the TX/OU games are great memories!

Try the 50's when the Adolpus and Baker Hotels were THE places to stay in Dallas, opposite each other. The fans were for the most part, well-behaved but mighty boisterous nevertheless. NO stabbings, or shootings.
Its a shame what the criminal element has done to a once gentle society.

Who cares?? Are you guys serious?? Just because it doesn’t involve SMU doesn’t mean we can’t talk about it or care. This is probably the biggest regular season college football game of the year and it’s being played in our own backyard. In addition, UT/OU has a fantastic college football environment, maybe the best of any game all year. I hate both schools, but I have a lot of respect for their place in college football.

Insane, you’re right, I was down there the night of the shooting. That was a sobering reminder of how violent a city Dallas can be. Like you said, the people causing the biggest problems had no affiliation with Texas or OU and the crowds were really getting out of control. But for the most part it was a blast....a Bourbon Street atmosphere.

BTW, our future conference mates, UH and USM, are playing a helluva game on ESPN2 right now: 29-29 going to OT.

Blackie Sherrod used to write great stories about the OU/Texas weekend. In the bad old days there were urban legends about fans throwing furniture out the hotel windows. If you lived in Dallas, you stayed home to avoid the madness. After crowd control measures became necessary, the downtown activities became more civilized. But if you doubt whether the pre-game intensity still remains, just go out to the fair grounds and witness the fierceness of this rivalry. And folks, in case you have missed it, the Sooners consider this a contest between the two states, not just the two state schools. Though you may not be an orange blood or even like UT, Oklahoma will imagine they have beaten you too if they win. To which I say, Hook'em Horns. I only wish that SMU had such a money game in our tradition.

That is an accurate assessment of of what goes on in the minds of some Oklahomans. Numerous OU fans see the game as a clash of cultures.

It is ironic that OU uses lots of Texans to win...and assuage some Oklahomans insecurity.

I will be there tomorrow dressed head to toe in SOONER colors hoping the Sooners spank those hated Texas Short Horns!

Hopefully those arrogant Short Horns will have to crawl back to austin AGAIN with their tail between their legs!

Of course you would think eventually those lame Horns will be able to beat OU.....but hopefully it's no time soon!

Enjoy the state fair and the game. OU/UT is Dallas' foremost collegiate sporting event.

Like Georgia/Florida (Jacksonville, FL) and Army/Navy (usually in Philadelphia, PA) Dallas gets a high-energy environment for a "neutral site" game.

The OU fans certainly know how it feels to lose four in a row. Remember Peter Gardere? Well, get ready for Benson to romp and stomp. The string is about to break. In East Texas we weren't so impressed with Pederson since Jacksonville High (The McCowns alma mater) beat him in district paaly his junior and senior years. Hook'em!
