Our \"non-revenue\" sports

Postby PK » Tue Oct 12, 2004 10:13 pm

I know "football" is the BIGGY and we don't know yet how our basketball teams are going to be ranked, but folks, our non-revenue sports are kicking A** out there and we should be damn proud of them. I know I am!!!

Way to go guys and gals... keep up the good work!!!!

So does this mean I'll see you at the soccer games this weekend (Friday and Sunday)?

True - we need to support all of the sports.

Kudos to the staff of PonyFans.com - volleyball player (Beth Karasek) was named Pony of the Week, with two soccer players (Adria Campbell and Alex Smith) earning honorable mention.

Can't do it this weekend, but I hope to make some of the soccer games this year.

Seriously, how ARE we doing in equestrian this season?

One thing about grammatical semantics, PK--you do not need to put non-revenue in quotation marks, because that is a literal description of those programs' money-generating status. From now on, you only need to put "revenue" in quotes when referring to football and men's hoops.

Depends on how you define revenue...last time I looked, you have to buy tickets to watch some of these other sports too. And if you are going to put quotation marks on "revenue" then you should also use them on "non-revenue". :)

Would the conversation change if we asked profit or non-profit, especially since we don't generate "positive operating margin" in any sport.

I appreciate that all sports are recognized and we have richer college experience for our student-athletes with our commitment to excellence in more than FB and BB.

If you look at the BCS schools, they are committed to a lot more sports and associated facilities than most non-BCS schools, especially the private ones. For SMU to be a NCAA player, the commitment and results of soccer, volleyball, swimming & diving, rowing, equestrian (can you say Title IX?), golf, tennis, etc. is very important.

I lament the loss of men's track & field; but we better stay fully invested in the remaining varsity sports.

:D

Winning the commissioner's cup

Postby Sam I Am » Thu Oct 14, 2004 9:03 am

SMU looks good when the school wins the commissioner's cup for best sports program, no thanks to FB & BB. Div. 1-A status requires all these others sports too. Tanks goodness we are wining in something.
