To get butts in the seats?

After TCU, I thought we would show better at this critical time for the programs.

Empty stadium looked embarrassing to all --- I am ashamed at what I saw yesterday.

Start giving the tickets away so people can try our product.

Force students to show or they dont get report cards.

Free tickets for boy/girl scouts.

Fire the Marketing Director.

Who cares --- we need butts in seats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To me the most disappointing thing about the crowd yesterday was the students completely disappearing after halftime. I thought that was a bit ridiculous. Yes it was hot on that side of the field but the group of people I was with fought through it. This was a HUGE conference game and to have attendance like that yesterday was so disheartening.

Seriously who really cares about this or thinks anything will change because SMU went from two decades of suck to two seasons over .500? The team needs to win big for a few years before this happens. Why would casual fans with no ties to the school pay to go to an SMU game against UCF when they have a HD tv with all the games and an iPad and cheap beer at home? SMU should just give away tickets or have an open gate policy for anything in the end zone until they consistently win. I'd rather Orsini figure out a big conference with big tv revenue than mess with this.

But the TEAM could have a badass star or two that gets ESPN love and a QB to start the season that doesn't melt down and they could go 11-1. The o-line could maybe do a swimsuit calendar. Those are maybe the only things the team can do to get butts in seats.

I have said it many times. We need a Marketing Director with a plan, who is also paid a percentage of the gate above say 20,000. That way you know they are working their tails off until 5:00 minutes before kick off because they are making money on every ticket they sell. SMU can't just go after the alumni that went here during the last 25 years. They obviously did not attend SMU because of the poor football team post DP.... I say there are college football fans moving into Dallas every day from out of state that would be potentially interested in supporting SMU, but we do not approach them when they get here. These fans hate most of the good Big 12 teams when they get here, and being that we have a good football team now to support, it is amazing to me we don't reach out. Area ticket sales outlets advertise that they sell tickets for all the pro teams, TCU, and most of the area Big 12 teams. but usually no mention of SMU. This is the job of a marketing dept. to make sure that our name gets out there, but there is little or no effort in this respect. Put information with the the Dallas Chamber of Commerce etc. and other area chambers. Hell, give fans a free ticket if they will buy one....The point is we have, for whatever reason, been on our butts long enough and its not putting butts in the seats. With a BCS bid and a good football team, it is time to move forward.
