USM and/or Tulsa

Post by Mustangsabu »

Obviously we all want the team to win on Saturday, but I have not seen any major discussion, and June has not mentioned it, on the priorities over the next two weeks. I know that the team is in a "one week at a time" mentality that is serving them very well, but here are my unsolicited thoughts on the matter.

We have 5 conference games left and if we win them all we will represent the West. We also have a game against Navy which, while I believe that we will win handsomely, we can lose and suffer no repercussions regarding our chances of winning the west.

We can lose 1 of our conference games and have it not affect our chances of winning the conference as long as that loss is not against Tulsa and Houston. If we beat both of them we will have the tie-breakers to top the division if two or more of the three end up with one loss.

The reason I bring all this obvious enough stuff up is that it is more important to win in Tulsa than it is to beat USM (on a related note, I think USM will be in the championship game). We beat USM and lose to Tulsa there is a very real chance that we miss out on the Championship.

I just wonder if that plays into the coaches and players minds at all....

I don't think Tulsa will end the year with only one conference loss.

Perhaps not, they have us, Marshall and Houston at home and UCF and UTEP away, but my point is that if we beat them, Houston and two of USM, Rice and Tulane, we do not have to rely on anyone else to do us a favor. Lose to Tulsa and we might need help.

I definitely understand your point and I think it is very valid. I just hope the team is honestly taking taking the view that the next game is always the biggest. I personally think that we will run the table up until the Houston game and then that game is a toss up.

Yeah, it would be amazing if a 11-0 UH is hosting a 10-1 SMU, both ranked and with a place in the Championship at stake. I don't know if I could take it!

I have my tickets to that game regardless.
