Is Jones our man for the future?
I'm a huge fan of JJ and I love how he's made us competitive again but is he really our guy for the future? I know he's proven himself to be able to turn programs around but with us going to the Big East we don't need a turnaround specialist. We need a coach who can compete with the best and one that emphasizes strong defense. JJ has never proven to be successful at the BCS level. When he went undefeated with Hawaii he got destroyed by Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. I am also concerned with the R&S offense and whether it is viable at the BCS level. Has any team recently been in contention for the national title running the R&S? Sure it does its job in C-USA where defenses aren't great but what about in the Big East? The Big East weather will surely have an effect on our pass-happy offense as well. And 4 Jones recruiting classes in you'd expect JJ to have a solid QB and a team able to win a C-USA championship but that hasn't happened yet.
I don't mean to sound like a pessimist but these are just my honest concerns and I'd love some feedback from you all.

The answer is a Yes, June is SMU's man for the future. No June, no bowl games, no Big East invite.

I agree that he's gotten us to the Big East. I'm questioning whether he can be successful in the BE as he has been in C-USA

Why does this deserve a new thread? This question has been asked plenty of times on this forum. Go and read those.

I hate the R&S but I love the culture change and the attitude he brings to the team. June is a great CEO of the program. He also genuinely cares about his players, his coaches, and SMU.

JJ was hired a couple of weeks before signing day in 08. He really did not have a chance to recruit a bunch of kids that year. So, JJ only has three recruiting classes under his belt and they are getting better each year.
GO MUSTANGS!

Re: Is Jones our man for the future?
So exactly how many teams run the run and shoot? Not sure how it is really much different than most of the spread attacks and passing offenses now. I see so many teams run pieces and parts of the run and shoot. Not sure why it won't work anymore especially against teams in the Big East. If Georgia Tech can run a triple option attack in the ACC, then I am pretty sure the run and shoot offense run to perfection can be an effective offense in any league.

Let me ask you this can you name five coachs better than june who would come here go ahead take your time
Re: Is Jones our man for the future?
His contract runs thru 2014, so I doubt he will stay after that. He will have accomplished everything that was ask of him, i.e. return to relevance and BCS status. So he will only be "our man for the near future". Personally I would love to see him go through 2016 or so.

If he walks away in 2014 itll be on his terms. If he wants to be here through 2020 SMU would make it happen.

Why question him? Has he let us down in anyway? What he has done at SMU is nothing short of miraculous. The only thing I question for the future is the fan base. Will we build one? I think we will it takes time.

Whether some like Jones or some do not, he is our coach for now. Other than bringing us back from the dead, he has also positioned us in a way that when he does leave SMU is now a desireable location to coach, and our next coach will be choosen from a good group of talent that want to be here. Our only direction right now is up.

Re: Is Jones our man for the future?
Right man at the right time. However, I don't think you can take it much farther without an "in your face" or fire breather type or two on the coaching staff. We don't have that guy and 18-21 year old young men are going to need an attention getter occasionally. You can only teach so much and so long. At some point you have to turn up the intensity to extreme. The staff's at Alabama, LSU, TCU, Auburn, Florida, etc have a fire guy or two.
And while I agree that the talent level has improved each year, I wonder what we would be saying if Klemm had not been here pulling a disproportionate share of the load in recruiting?
