Boise to BCS Bowl?

With Michigan losing today and FSU losing right now, BSU has a chance to move to #7 in the BCS polls. If they get into the top 6 they are guaranteed a BCS bowl along with Utah. Year of the underdog?

Looking at the BCS standings, Boise State is #9.

That would take a miracle, probably at least 2 of Miami, Cal, UT, and Georgia losing again. If it did happen though, the Rose Bowl would be stuck with Michigan versus Utah, Boise St., Miami/VT, or Boston College. They would be a little upset I think.

My dream is that the Aggies beat UT, USM beats Cal, ND beats USC, Tennessee beats Auburn. OU loses to the Big XII north champion. Miami loses to Virginia Tech. And if the press really wanted to have some fun, vote for Boise and Utah to be 1-2. Think the BCS might decide a playoff would make more sense at that point?

What's really a good sign is that Louisville is now #10 and has an outside shot as well. The fact that they have a loss is proof that there is progress and you don't need to go undefeated in non-BCS to have a shot at it. Unforunately what you do need is to win with an outrageously tough schedule.

Looks like all that has to happen is for A$M to beat TX and Boise is likely in and Cal is screwed.

Being realistic, Louisville doesn't have a shot. The 6 BCS conference champs are gauranteed a spot. That only leaves 2 at-large and they are handed out in this order:

-Any team that is #1 or #2 (Barring a huge upset, both of those will be conference champs this year)
-Any non-BCS team that finishes in the top 6 (Utah should hang on to their spot and Boise St. has an outside shot at jumping in if Texas or Cal loses, so that's at least 1 at-large spot gone)
-The highest ranked at-large team if they are #3 or #4 (Assuming either Texas or Cal wins, that takes the last at-large spot)

Only if spots remain after applying these criteria do the bowls get to choose from the top 12 teams. That means for Louisville to get in they would have to climb to #6, which doesn't look possible to me.

I do think it's a good sign that 3 non-BCS teams are hanging in near the top. The outsiders hopes of getting in aren't just hanging on one team this year. Had Utah fallen, Boise St. was there to take their place. As a whole, the non-BCS leagues are improving their standing.

I also think it's a good sign that a one loss, #5 ranked Texas team is very likely to be left out of the BCS because of a "mid-major". Now the big boys will know what it's like to be deserving but excluded.

Boise is sitting at #7 but well behind #6 Utah and barely ahead of #8 Georgia and #9 Miami. Gotta pull for USM to upset Cal and for A$M to beat Texa$ and Ga Tech to beat Georgia and VA Tech to beat Miami...if all those things were to occur, it could get very interesting. I do agree with the Boise people who are complaining that it was the pre-season rankings more than anything that put Utah ahead of them and once you start from behind and nobody loses, it's impossible to catch up. Of course, it didn't help Boise's cause to need OT to beat San Jose State!

With UT playing in Austin favored over a ranked Aggie team, their BCS computer rating could move them from 5th to 4th in the polls ahead of California if the Horns win on Friday. Apparently they are being squeezed out of the BCS once again because of the peculiar rules that govern the selection of the two at large teams. The best thing that could happen for everybody would be for USC to lose to Notre Dame or UCLA. Auburn is going to get shafted if there are three undefeated teams at the end of the season. Maybe the BIG boys will be in favor of a true playoff if the BCS keeps slighting good teams.

Actually I guess the most perfect scenario would be for Cal to lose to USM, UT to finish 4th and get passed over due to BCS rules in favor of Boise and Utah and of course Boston College. USC, LSU and OU finishing undefeated so someone gets burned there. This would make the third year in a row that someone got screwed over (remember, USC, Oregon) The Bowls will begin to agitate about not having their historical match-ups. A playoff would start to sound pretty good at that point.

Actually, all it would take for Boise to move from 7 to automatic #6, would be a loss by Cal to USM or Texas to A&M. Those teams, ranked #4 and 5, would drop below and Boise would move up.

Money. If everything breaks right and Boise makes a BCS bowl, do we get a cut of the WAC bowl money? Wouldn't that be almost a $1M for SMU?
