2009 Class Question

Post by SMU 86 »

I know JJ talked about the 2008 being lean but how many players from the 2009 class will we have that have contributed other than Frazier and DJ? Just asking.

5 good players but what about depth? How many players will contribute next year outside of the ones mentioned above?

that's a different question.

a number guys in that class are no longer with the program.

kevion gamble
chayse joubert
jr mcconico
ryan clark & beck coulter - never made it in

but you're right, outside of the guys i initially mentioned, there's not a lot of depth offered by that class.

12 players from that class are either no longer on the team or never came to smu to begin with.

in additions to the guys mentioned above...brian collins and james scott are big contributors.

James Scott and Bryon Collins have started too-Jordan Favreau may play next year, Bryon Brown has played some as a Second stringer and on Special Teams

If 12 guys are not with the team or never came to begin with I can see the lack of depth issue.

6 of them were NCAA non-qualifiers-about 4 flunked out of SMU

shouldn't be a surprise-we've had about 4-6 NCAA non-qualifiers just about every year. We are targeting a completely different type of athlete than in the past which is why Jones should not be analyzed based upon what prior coaches accomplished

BTW to the best of my knowledge the correct number is 5 recruits from 2009 have flunked out

Looks like almost half the class is not here now. I hope we do better in future classes

I get that SMU is hard, but c'mon we cant have that many people flunking out. Is SMU's GPA requirement ridiculous? I mean schools like Bama and others have no worry about players flunking. It sucks, I wish we just take a bit of hit on the GPA and let athletes maintain above a 2.00. Also let them squeeze in with lower score than others. We need the player not the academic reputation. Once the program gets up then bring back the rigorous system.

NCAA has minimum Academic Progress Toward Degree and minimum GPA requirements that apply to all schools. Now one of the requirements is that the player must be eligible under the normal rules applicable to all students at his university. So there are slight differences in how NCAA minimum requirements apply to each 120 Division 1A schools. Its my understanding that SMU has made some changes based upon June Jones' urging in those "school rules" that conform to the rules of our rivals in recent years. But really most of those that flunked out just failed to meet NCAA minimum requirements from what I've read. A university can not have two sets of rules for athletes and regular students under NCAA rules.
