2012: The year of the Tank Job
Anybody remember the rumor that Phil Bennett interviewed for the Iowa State job in 2006 during the season?
There are still plenty of people around here saying he was a good guy.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Dooby,
Bennett was to you what Jones is to me. You made it pretty clear it pretty clear toward the end of his tenure here that you cared very little for him. You called him a snake oil salesman or something like that.
Help me understand the distinction between the two. If you believe that the results are involved in this, then you missed the point.

Jaws, we've made clear that our academic standards will put us on a more competitive level and we will attract better candidates.
In the previous 20+ years, we were recruiting with fewer aarows in the quiver. Far fewer.
We don't have to put up with Jones' garbage 24/7/365.
We can start over and still be a quality program with the right leadership and the right direction. If there's a dip, so be it.

Ok...You can feel how you want to feel, but this wasnt just a guy being approached by other schools for a better job...
There are ethics to this...You need to be somewhat loyal to your current employer even while looking for new options...
Surprised there are no non-competes in College football...Im sure it would be hard to enforce, but they get us all the time...

Alright then, now we know. The general is down for having a brief respite of success once every 30 years or so and sucking for the rest of the time. You can call yourself an SMU alum, but can't really say you want what's good for SMU. Too bad you missed out on those soccer homecoming games.
If the circle of champions want him gone, then he's going to be gone. He has done too much good ffor this program to be a pariah.
Again, just cause MM is on a different side of opinion does that really mean hes wanting SMU to fail. I am on the side with keeping JJ till we start hitting only 7-5 seasons or go down in progress. There is some logical arguments to MM, because we do want a coach thats a SMU coach. We dont want for 6 years down the road him saying that he will do anything to boost Hawaiis economy, that hes leveraging every year, or continuing a 7-5 record indefinite. There is no doubt, sorry to disagree MM, but JJ was and is still a driving force of success. Its better that we leave him untill he can build a suitable foundation for the program, so he can transfer it to his successor. I think that since we have gone to our 3rd straight bowl game since the DP that we let him know our frustration but give him some room to make these kind of errors and continue to support (until like I said if he continue to keep doing these things.)
Also, the only group of people who really have say in this is CoC because its their pocketbooks.

I call Bennett a used car salesman.
The difference boils down to knowing how to coach as evidenced by 3 consecutive winning seasons.
Notice I haven't disputed the assertion that June is an a-hole or may not be the greatest guy on the planet.

Mitch, you've missed the point completely! All these coaches are snakes. You put up with them while they keep winning and cut ties with them as soon as they start losing. If somehow they prove loyal and good ambassadors, then you give them a little more rope. At the end of the day it is all about winning. I can't say many good things about Cavan and he was a loser. Bennett may or may not have been a good guy but he was a loser. Think what you want about June Jones but he has proven to be a winner. Don't hate the player hate the game.

in 2009, Boston College fired their coach for interviewing for an NFL job. They won 4 games this year. Super awesome.
If someone shows me June's behavior related to his employment is negatively impacting the team, I will reconsider. One decommit from a kid we weren't going to hold onto anyway isn't going to cut it.

We'll never know the answer to this but would Bennett have taken SMU to a bowl game had he been given the same academic advantages that Jones did?
Jones said he wasn't coming here if things didn't change with respect to that.
And I would contend that his coaching leaves a little bit desired when you get your [deleted] kicked by Navy year after year because you don't feel like being there.
Re: 2012: The year of the Tank Job
I think Bennett would have taken SMU to a bowl game eventually, but I also think that he would not have been as successful as June Jones has been at SMU.

Jones said he wasn't coming here if things didn't change with respect to that.
And one night right after he was hired at First and Ten Bennett told me a bold faced lie and said he would not have taken the SMU job if he could not recruit whomever he wanted to.
So you agree that Jones coming here was great for this program.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
