NEW COMMITMENTRivals.com is reporting that SMU has picked up a solid commitment Monday from Spearman (Texas) TE Jeff Brock (6-4, 240, 4.7) -- although Rivals is saying he was recruited as an athlete.
"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”

Congratulations, Jeff! You've made a GREAT decision!
It's hard to judge a guy like this, considering a lot of 2A teams don't get much publicity. I found one write-up that calls Brock one of the more athletic TEs around. If that's the case, and if in fact he stays at TE, does that mean we now have three athletic TEs? And the report said he's being recruited as an athlete. Anyone know what other positions he might play, if not TE? Congratulations, coaches! Keep it up!
Re:
Ah, I love answering my own questions. Seems our man Brock also is a DE for the Spearman Lynx.
Hoss, my guess is that he will play defensive end. The DMN says that he had 88 tackles and 12 sacks as well as 19 catches for 245 yards and 5 touchdowns. Given our need for ends that can pressure the quarterback, that seems like the logical position for him.
Please take this in a light manner.
I guess the HERD of BIG MEN needs some quuick ones too ![]() With the height and at 240 now, I hope he can add a few pounds and keep the 4.7 speed. Or another satatement would be... add a few pounds and keep a great 15 to 20 yard time. The coaches are doing well again. I remember back 5 years ago, and I do not remember having so many verbal commitments. Welcome to Ponyland - Where dreams are built! Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Welcome aboard, Jeff! Congratulations on your decision - SMU is an amazing place, and you've joined a team on the rise.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
would love to hear recruiting guru's take on this commitment. Bennett is building some nice depth at TE & DE. Have to wonder if this guy is still growing and might project as a DT or on the OL somewhere.
More and more coaches are starting to load up on athletic guys this size. In the NFL, everyone knows Tony Gonzalez and Jeremy Shockey, but there are more and more Jason Wittens and Chris Cooleys and Antonio Gateses out there - big, athletic guys who can run and catch. Tight ends are becoming more and more athletic, and allowing coaches to create more options within their offenses. When you have a tall guy with good (quick) feet, you have choices - a potential receiving/blocking threat as a TE, or a guy (like Iowa grads Eric Steinbach and Robert Gallery, among others) who can grown into bigtime offensive tackles. Obviously, a large part of whether he stays at TE/DE or moves to OL/DT depends on whether or not he's done growing. Whether this guy is the next Robert Gallery or the next Warren Sapp (recruited to Miami as a TE) or maybe the next Jason Witten or the next Joe Jerevicious (recruited to Penn State as a TE) remains to be seen.
The DMN's version:
"Spearman tight end Jeff Brock said he has orally committed to SMU. Oral commmitments are non-binding. Brock had 19 catches for 245 yards and five touchdowns and also had 88 tackles and 12 sacks. The first day a recruit can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 2." So just over 25% of his catches end up in the end zone - sounds darn good, if you ask me. PonyFan talks about TE recruits who end up at other positions .... didn't Cory Muse get recruited as a TE/LB, too?
Welcome to SMU! You've made a great decision and the fans will thank you for it! See ya this fall at Ford Stadium!
NEW COMMITMENTI read about this kid in the Amarillo paper the other day. He is not 6'4", he is 6'6" and is being recruited as a TE. All other stats are correct. Rivals. com got this all wrong.
