What do yall make of the ND coaching decision? ESPN said this morning that Weis will coach with the Patriots until they're out of the playoffs. But if they go to the Super Bowl (which is Feb. 6), he won't get to South Bend until after Signing Day (Feb. 2). I'm sure he'll put together a staff quickly and get them out on the recruiting trail, but could ND take a serious recruiting hit with this hire?

just happened to meet a ND guy yesterday who talked my ear off about Weis. Says the guy was a teacher before he got into coaching but that he is very highly respected as an offensive coach. Will be interested to see how that tranfers to a head coaching position. The story this guy told me was one from spring practice last year when Weis dropped in and was apparently critical of Willingham's offense and his coordinator. Reportedly, the two (O-Coordinator and Weis) got into a shouting match...something about Weis calling ND's offense a 3rd grade offense.
There's no question ND wanted Urban Meyer, but he sounded like they are pretty happy with Weis and expect him to make a huge differnce in ND's offense right away...with the athletes currently on the roster. We shall see.

they already have with recruits looking to bail. It won't hurt them from about December 20 to about January 4th since it is a dead period anyway-but if the Patriots go far in the playoffs he better have some damn good recruiters to close the deal. Thisv could set the program back even farther.

Supposedly, ND is trying to lure Al Golden from Virginia. Golden, a former Penn State player is a strong recruiter - especially in New Jersey where ND has traditionally recruited well.

ND is the probably second most popular college football team in NJ (after Penn State).

If Rutgers ever got its act together it would be a Top 25 program just by recruiting NJ talent - Rutgers is the only D-1A football team in NJ and the New York Metro area. Most top NJ football players go out-of-state.

NJ is usually ranked around tenth in any list of the top states for producing D-1A HS football talent.

they seem to always say that about their coaches before they fail several yrs later or don't meet expectations.

I'm from New England, been a Patriot fan for 30 years. I hate ND, but they're getting a great coach. Brady credits Weis with turning Brady from a 6th round draft pick to a multiple Super Bowl MVP. You know the coaching is good when you're not yelling at the TV about the play selection. And Weis learned from the best in the business, Belichick.

My only concern about Weis is his health. He had a serious intestinal problem a few years ago (almost died) and he's a bit overweight.

Now someone will probably go after the Pats' defensive coach, Romeo Crennel.

I agree. I would love SMU and ND to be soulmates. Privates schools with an attitude, kicking some state school b*tt. The ghost of Doak Walker would also agree!

I heard a reporter say that they didn't know who was dumber Notre Dame or Weis. Having a coach in two places or actually one now, but holding on to his old job with recruiting and all going on.He needs to be devoting his time to that program. It is in shambles as we speak.

Weis was their 8th choice that we know of. His wierd situation was probably a factor in his being so low on their list. I suspect that he might have been a higher choice if he had been available immediately. Willingham meanwhile landed on his feet at Washington (back in the PAC-10).

Actually I was very impressed with Coach Weis when he spoke at the press conference.

Coach Weis has 3 Super Bowl Rings(maybe 4 soon?) and I doubt Parcells nor Belichick have alot of "spares" working for them for years on end.

Coach Weis seems alot like Parcells but with a slightly nicer younger side.

I predict this guy is going to succeed at Notre Dame!

Insane, I watched it yesterday and had the same impression: this guy is a winner and Notre Dame may have come out of these events much stronger for the long term. And, I also agree than ND should be a model for college sports, especially for a fellow private, somewhat church-related school like us with our own history on the gridiron.

With Doak, we beat them. Let's wake up our echo's! And take our place as a "nasty" team in CUSA and with our non-conference schedule. To play A&M, Baylor and TCU and give them all a game they won't soon forget.

If ND's new handle is "nasty", what is SMU's moniker, as we reinvent ourselves? Everyone needs to fear playing us.

Charlie Weis wants to hire Dave Cutcliffe, former head coach at Ole Miss, as his Offensive Coordinator, along with another offensive coach, Latina, who had recently accepted a job from Steve Spurrier at South Carolina. Probably hadn't unpacked his suitcase.
