If Bartel is playing AAA ball one year after HS, he better drop football and stick with baseball. I doubt if he is already at the AAA level. Does anyone know his record this summer?

Maverick, how do you know so much about who they are? And Donnie Gilray, have you seen him throw. I was told that was his first day out there. He was watching and learning right now. What is Hodges doing now. When is the next practice. Someone should go and ask someone about Gilray's past. There must be a reason that he signed with a D 1 school as a QB.

Fellas,

Just so you know Richard is playing rookie ball, the equivalent of about A, in Florida and will be back at the end of July. I spoke with him a few nights ago and I'll simply say his mind is in the right place as far as ya'll should be concerned. If not for the contract he probably would already be back throwing the football here. I'll leave it at that and you all will learn the whole scoop when it comes out, but it's not my place to say. So, the latest word on Richard is he's at 215, lean (obviously). So if you're worried his mind is on baseball, be at ease, it will be a very exciting fall. And I also heard that Gilray was D-End until his senior year. Not positive though. Ask PPP.

If Luker has quit, in addition to Meeks, we need to sign another QB for next year

Ok this d-end thing is killing me. I played with Donnie last year and the year before that at Rowlett. When he came here he was a QB and Watkins(our head coach at the time) wouldn't let him start there because of the option based offense and they had a little guy to do it. So Donnie said that he wanted to play somewhere. He played @ FB, DE, TE, LB, and even one game he play DT. He wasn't especially good at any of them. But he did well. He still talked about being QB. We teased him about it because he was so big. Senior year we got a new coach. Kiff Hardin. He ran an offensed that is a complex as any I have been in. Donnie picked it up as much as he could and won the starting job. The first game of the season, coach put in another QB and from there Donnie and the other QB split time. Obviously Donnie didn't appreciate that. About the 5th game of the season.( I think we were 1-5) He came out when we played Mesquite. We had that game won. Coach made a bad call and that happens. But thats over. He had a great end of the year and has the arm of a college QB. He played QB his freshmen year on JV. His Sophomore year on Varsity in Hawaii. He has played D-end in high school. He loves QB. Some of you may not care that i am saying this. But Just a friend, put his in for Bartel. They are all great guys and will help eachother out and we will be that much better. Donnie is working out everyday. He is getting stronger and faster. This d-end may not be a bad thing. He knows the game and loves it. Just like every other QB's there. Good luck to all the QB's and go mustangs

OOGuy,

Thank you for clarifying. I had no idea what the situation was, I had only heard the D-end thing, but I figured there had to be something more than just that because he signed a D-1 scholarship for QB. And you are certainly welcome to put in for your friend's, Lord knows I've done my share. Thanks for the info.

This board could use some clarification. Bartel is playing rookie ball and needs to get to Dallas quickly if he wants any chance to play QB next year. Tate Wallis works hard everyday and shows some natural leadership savvy, but he is the kind of player that needs to make almost zero mistakes-like he has so far-for this team to win if he winds up at QB. Luker, well, unfortunately, has decided to pursue a musical career. I know alot of players who came in with him and they wished he would have progressed like the expectations placed on him, but it never seemed to click and they all wish him the best of luck, as we all should, in his future endeavors. The younger guys haven't been there throwing, and the walk-ons, well, let's hope none of the scholarship kids get hurt. I, along with everyone else, should appreciate everything they do for the program, but whoever said they sucked earlier was closer to accurate than wrong. And this won't do anything for anyone except sting a bit, but David Page, and whether this is every official or not, was the reason Bennett brought this offense to SMU with hopes of Page hanging around one more year. But that's neither here nor there.

The loss of Page and Luker will likely have the effect of making the QB position a bit shaky at the start of the season. However, I can’t help but feel that forcing Wallis, Bartel and the rest of the young talent into the mix ahead of schedule will make the team stronger in the long run. Hopefully, it will start paying off by mid-season.

Page was a loss to the program, but I don’t think he was the solution to the Mustang’s QB woes. And all of Luker’s ‘experience’ didn’t make him look appreciably better than the younger QBs in spring ball IMHO.

Opinions?

After reading the column on John Hampton, it does seem like Wallis could very well be the right one. Not to write anyone off, but I recall another QB we once had who was short, not real fast with not much of an arm but one heck of a determination to win - some guy by the name of McIlhenny...
