And don't forget about Burcham. I don't think he starts, but he's in the mix.
Re: So who's our starting Q.B. next season...
If he graduated High School early, Gilbert would have had 6 normal semesters at UT (2009 Spring-2011 Fall) plus 3 Summer Semesters. Toss in some AP classes in High School and... It's perfectly plausible that he's graduating and x-fering as a Grad student.
Wouldn't this also clear the hurdle that Stallion pointed out earlier about nobody getting a 6th year after sitting out a year (or whatever). This makes a lot more sense. Hope it works out for the kid.

Burcham will without a doubt red shirt and will not be in the mix his freshman year, especially coming off a torn acl

Let conner preston get a shot at the starting job
Re: So who's our starting Q.B. next season...
I bet all three of them get a shot. Preston, Padron and Gilbert (eligibility issues aside).
However, *if* he's eligible... my money's on Gilbert winning the job.
If he's not, I have no idea between the other two.
Burcham is not in play for 2012, I feel pretty certain he's a red-shirt.
On the other topic I saw mentioned above... maybe it's just me, but I see no reason for Padron to transfer. He's not an NFL prospect, and the SMU diploma will serve him better than just about any FCS school he could transfer to.
There's my two cents on all sorts of crap.

Good point about Burcham redshirting. Forgot about that. He'll be Printz's backup.

Maybe June will have a moment of clarity:
Picture it -- One night, June walks out to the field at Ford and sees a burning goal post. The goal post says to him:
"JUNE, LEAD MY PEOPLE. DUMP YOUR OFFENSE. IT NO LONGER WORKS. USE A FULLBACK AND A TIGHT END. THEN YOU WILL SUCCEED AT SMU.''
"Good idea, my Lord.''
''OF COURSE, IT'S A GOOD IDEA!''
I don't believe that use a fullback at Minnesota, Ohio State (who is now running the spread), Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois.
The Big 10 + 2 dumping the three yards and a cloud of dust offense and becoming a spread offense conference, the end of the world is near.
GO MUSTANGS!

IF this is true i hope they are using it for recruiting purposes. If i was a stud receiver i would want to have Gilbert throwing to me - you think he will be scared of Baylor when he has seen Alabama as a freshman? You think CUSA is going to freak him out? Junes offense was made for this guy - all he want to do is throw long deep balls. This will be fun. It changes everything.

June's offense is fairly complicated. You don't just walk in and start.
My money is on Kyle, who I saw at Cowboys Stadium a few hours ago, btw.

When does KP plan on having his surgery? I would have thought he might have it over xmas vacation and then be partially available for spring.
