SMU Gets Commitment from 5 Star QB!

Postby ojaipony » Thu Dec 22, 2011 1:52 am

Just thought I'd remind everyone that GG might be playing here next year with 2 years of eligibility. I'm pretty excited about that. What we need now is another strong WR recruit (hopefully Holleman becomes the real deal with DJ and Thompson). And I hope that big JUCO safety commits very soon. If that happens, along with even Lewis/Marks decommitting, this will be a kick [deleted] class!

(trying to stay positive folks). ;-)

Go 'Stangs!

JUCO Safety signed with Tech. BTW no sign that Ricky Collins or Keivon Gamble signed with TCU today indicating perhaps they are going to need some more time to qualify-perhaps

I support SMU regardless but I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist just a realist. And from a realistic standpoint we have to do better to replace the possible upcoming recruiting losses for the 5 star QB that could not cut it at Texas will not have time to throw the ball at SMU.

As a graduate of UT and SMU, I support both teams. The UT fan in me was horrified by the Gilbert era, but the McCoy II/Ash era has been worse. Watching them struggle this year I realized UT has serious offensive problems that Young & McCoy I were able to cover up.

I predict that the Padron/Gilbert combo will lead to a major upgrade next year.

If I remember correctly Texas graduated a large chunk of their O-Line with Colt McCoy ... Gilbert's year was definitely a rebuilding year for them. The 4-0 start that Texas had with the McCoy-Ash combo this year was HIGHLY overrated as well ... I watched them struggle against Rice for 3 quarters. Once they played OU they got exposed for being a garbage top 25 team.

Texas runs an entirely different kind of offense that needs a qb geared more for the running game then the passing game. SMU needs a passer first and foremost, one that is agile but not necessarily a speedster or option type. We will see Gilbert in an entirely different situation, and for all practical purposes a different playing position because the two offences are so different. I'm hoping he proves to be a 'Run n Shoot' kind of guy.

From those of you who've seen him play, what are your opinions about his abilities and them playing out in our offense? I haven't seen him play much --- it seems that accuracy and decisionmaking is key in our offense, not so much agility or arm strength (although both are important no matter what scheme, but I'm talking priorities).

As a UT fan, I watched him show an inability to make the great plays that made Young and McCoy special players in UTs offense. His arm was good, but could not deal with the pressure from the rush he was facing. Now that Ash and McCoy II failed for similar reasons, I think UT needs to find a way to protect the QB or get the ball out faster. Young's running ability was once in a lifetime.

Watching SMU play, I think we would have won 2-3 more games with a healthy Gilbert at QB. He has a big arm and is pretty accurate. If he can make the reads JJ wants, he will hit his targets. He is mobile enough, but not like Rgiii
