RC Slocum went out to the shed, late one to give LSU....

Postby Peruna_Ate_My_Rolex » Sat Jan 01, 2005 12:45 am

an interview, apparently. Looks like he's joined the LSU list of candidates.

R.C. Slocum has reportedly joined the list of candidates to replace Nick Saban at LSU.

Slocum, who coached at Texas A&M from 1989-2002, interviewed Thursday with LSU officials, according to The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. He did not return phone messages Friday.

But in The Times-Picayune, Slocum refused to confirm or deny the interview. Slocum called the LSU opening "a great opportunity" and noted that he has Louisiana ties, including playing at McNeese State.

At Texas A&M, Slocum compiled a 123-47-2 record before being fired after finishing 6-6 in 2002. He now serves as a special assistant to the A&M president.

Louisville's Bobby Petrino, Oklahoma State's Les Miles and LSU assistant Bobby Williams also have reportedly talked with LSU about the opening. Miles has denied any formal contact.

Other names that have been mentioned include Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio and Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

The LSU job became available when Saban agreed to become coach of the Miami Dolphins. He will coach the Tigers today in the Capital One Bowl against Iowa before moving on to the NFL.

I can't see Slocum at LSU

Postby Sam I Am » Sat Jan 01, 2005 10:06 am

Slocum is no Lou Holtz, so I can't see him begin recycled at LSU. The realy good coaches must have already been hired away if the bengals have interveiwed R.C. who is over the hill now.

Just to set the record straight, guys...

Stallion has a better shot at being the new HC for LSU than RC Slocum.

Slocum's interview has been characterized by the local media here as a "courtesy meeting" after he contacted LSU about his interest. He is NOT considered a viable candidate.

Put your money on Jack Del Rio, especially since Petrino "withdrew" his name from consideration this morning. Something tells me Petrino was informed that he was not going to get the job, which also leads me to believe LSU has its man.

Of course, I could be wrong...about Del Rio, that is--not Slocum.

Well, supposedly Del Rio and LSU were supposed to meet on friday but the meeting never happened for one reason or another, so he might not be an option. I suspect that maybe Petrino either got a change of heart of after seeing his team win or maybe LSU felt there was too much drama involving him that they didn't want to bother with him so they let him drop himself from the search. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if Louisville dropped his arse after having to endure two seasons of him sniffing out more high profile jobs after making a committment to Louisville but I doubt it happens. At this point, I think they'll end up going after Les Miles now unless LSU has a mystery candidate that the press is not aware of at this time. Of the listed candidates, the only one who I think would fit the profile would be Kirk Ferentz and I don't know that he'd leave Iowa.

Didn't RC say he would never play SMU - as if he somehow "owned" A&M?

Isn't Del Rio thought of as one of the NFL's brightest young coaches? And doesn't he have Jacksonville ahead of where many thought they would be? He went to USC -- why would he leave the Jags for the Tigs?

He has connection to Louisiana in that he was an Assistant with the Saints plus his wife is from Lafayette and his stepdaughter just graduated from LSU. I guess he figured it was worth a listen initially but since he didn't even bother to show up for the meeting with LSU officials, I guess that means he had a change of heart.

Early this afternoon, a local Baton Rouge AM radio station was reporting that Les Miles of OSU will get the nod as LSU's new HC. That report is now being confirmed by the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

I can't say I'm thrilled, but, oh well...I guess the choice could be worse.
