He took over a petty bad program so I am sure a lot of those losses were early and the NFL teams see that. Belichick gave Tampa Bay high compliments on him with they were inquiring about a coach.

The turnaround is commendable but Rutgers has been good for awhile now and still never got over the hump even in a bad Big East. I give him 3 seasons tops before he's back coaching college football, coaches just don't have much time to pull off turnarounds at that level before management and fans get restless.

Schiano helped turn around the ( literally ) worst football program in the history of the NCAA. Rutgers and Princeton played the first ever college football game and until Schiano arrived they had only played in one bowl game in program history and that was created specifically for them, played in Giant stadium and lasted only one time. He is a Jersey guy and vowed to try to keep NJ talent in state as Rutgers was the last choice of any FBS calibur kid. Initially he had success with his Florida pipeline from his days as Offensive Coordinator for Miami. As time passed his Florida pipe line began to dry up as he concentrated on NJ and Pennsylvania. The program crested with an undefeated team defeating Louisville on a wild Thursday night highly watched game. Disappointment followed with an end of season loss thereby missing out on a BCS game. Seems that things have been stable since then with a credible program, but they never really turned the corner. He was responsible for all new football training facilities in place of facilities that were absolutely embarrassing. Rutgers stadium was built into the side of a hill and had bleachers on both sides of the field. As late as 2001 the stadium was still equiped with rotted out boards for row seats that were installed in the mid 1950s. I actually fell through boards so rotted that you could not sit on them or stepped on boards that broke under foot. Wild weeds and uncut brush coupled with wind blown garbage collected in the one end zone built into the hill. I simply cannot paint a picture of how bad things were at Rutgers when he took over. Today they have enclosed the end zones and added an upper deck to the visitors side to the tune of over $130 million and have a real first class facility. Schiano and the former AD created enthusiasm and started trying to interest the alums and sutdents in the program and they have largely succeeded. Some have criticize his coaching, but I think he has generally done a great job. He has built the foundation and it will be difficult to get a guy as dedicated as he to continue the program. My take is that he worked so hard to get things done that he simply ran out of steam and just needed a change. I saw and heard him as a tireless recruiter despite some comments on this board to the contrary. He will be hard to replace and I cannot imagine what this does to his 2012 recruiting class.

Pocono - Wikipedia says that Rutgers Stadium was rebuilt during 1993 and the Scarlet Knights played at the Meadowlands that year, with "new" Rutgers Stadium opening in 1994. You are not the first person that I have heard that has said that the old wooden bleachers were still there in 1999. Do you know if the "new" stadium construction was actually a new stadium, or did they just expand the old stadium while leaving the old wooden seating in place?
