Scott Cross - UT-Arlington . Over-achiever; players respect and play hard for him; straight as an arrow; very
experienced and capable assistants with Texas and DFW ties. His teams have scrimmaged and beaten SMU by double digits the last two years with "less highly regarded" talent. Can be had for 500K.

He's not leaving that building and his alma mater for 500k. Good coach though, and you're right, they've smoked us in scrimmages

Seeing some good names; let's implore SO not to hire a few- Paul Hewitt; Fran; Matt Doherty; open to additional input.

Dan Hurley, the current coach of Wagner College.
I think SMU could get him.

I haven't followed Weber's career too closely but I think he makes a very good candidate. I agree with the notion that he stayed too long at Illinois and got away from his normal ways when the pressure started mounting. But overall he's proven he can recruit and coach and I think SMU would be a good place where he could start over without the same expectations as Illinois but still plenty of notoriety with the Big East move happening.

You got the "dream" part right, but slipped up on the "realistic" part.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

You can't hire Weber b/c he despises the AAU system, and it's more corrupt in Dallas than most places. The reality is that we're stepping up to the big time, so you have to get someone that plays on the same field as the rest of the BE coaches, and Weber does not

I like Hurley as a candidate but have heard he & Orsini are a match made in hell. As in they wouldn't be on speaking terms w/in weeks.

Is it realistic to expect a new coach to come in here and immediately recruit from the corrupt Dallas AAU circles? If so then I'm all for that, but I thought the big calling card of the Princeton offense (before Doh disgraced that) was that we could use a different style to compete in the Big East since there's no way we can immediately start recruiting BE athletes.

Weber's a guy who could bring in good recruits who are going to play hard night in and night out. I think the goal of our next hire should be someone who can quickly get this program back to respectability (middle of the pack in the BE). If the expectation is the compete with the elite in the BE in the next 2-3 yrs then that's crazy.

I'm an Illinois fan, and my son has been to Weber's camp, but i have mixed feelings at best about BW at SMU. The knock on him is he doesn't relate all that well with players. That only seems to be getting to be more and more of a challenge for him as he gets older. The other thing is he is very stubborn. For all the talk about his yielding to pressure and changing, i don't think he changed squat. He NEVER plays zone. Period. No matter what. He will play man to man against Jared Sullinger tonight for 40 minutes and get eaten alive before he will ever pack in a zone defense. Nice guy, clean as a whistle, but he has some weak assistants (Jay Price) and don't see them recruiting Texas very well. I'd rather go with a young assistant from UT or someplace and take a chance on an up and comer with real energy. Hewitt, Weber, Doh, they don't excite me at all.
