How good is Matt Williams??

I saw that Tubbs signed a 6'2 SG from TCA- Addsion named Matt Williams.

Anybody have any information on him?? Was he a top recruit? Who did we beat out to get him??

Supposedly a scoring machine - risk would be he has played a much slower game (athlete-wise) so you hope he will be able to get his shot off.

Not sure what you mean by slower game and not getting his shot off...everybody plays a "slower game" in HS and this kid makes 3.8 3's per game. If you play any kind of offense worth sending out there you can get somebody open for a three. He's averaging 29 a game and although he plays private school ball, they've had a non-district season full of games against public schools. Sounds like the kind of outside shooter we've been missing. DMN said Bobby Knight, among others, was interested.

the difference in getting your shot off in 5A and SPC not to mention Division 1A is significant-if you were open for a 3 would you rather have Quenton Ross or Ross Perot Jr. attempting to block your shot?

That's why I said everybody in HS plays a slower game by comparison...and for the record I'd rather hoop against Perot Jr. than Q any day of the week and twice on Sunday. But it does not change the fact this kid is filling it up from downtown right now and is coming to SMU, where he will hopefully do the same. BTW, what's the word in the recruiting rags on this guy?

I hear he is for real. I was skeptical at first, but it sounds like a good signing. The backcourt looks set for the future again with Willingham and Williams. Now we need some power guys.

he is 3 star in Rivals but he really flew under the radar. To be fair, Williams earned his scholarship by his outstanding performances against 5A and 4A schools despite coming from a much smaller classification. I think he got over 50 on Plano and I saw several over 40 against big schools.

I take it Texas private school basketball is a step below public school. Here in the greater DC area it is the opposite. Most of the studs are at private/Catholic schools and there are some decent players in public schools. Now the opposite rule seems to apply to girls. The reason is that Catholic schools have scholarships for "needy" kids and they can recruit. Thus a junior high player or freshman who is lighting it up, suddenly ends up at a Catholic school. Sometimes a school district line shift sends great players running to private schools out here. There are non-Catholic schools that recruit as well and offer scholarships. For the kid its great because he has much better test scores and a much better chance to go to a good school in the Big East or ACC.

I linked a DMN article on the basketball page from yesterday. Says he hit 61 as season high vs. Plano West. Now I think P West is 5A, but not sure how good they are supposed to be.

He did score 61 against Plano West, which is a nice feat...I don't mean to discount it, but Plano West runs that weird, weird, weird offense where they just try to run and shoot 3's, meaning the other team gets lots of fast breaks, easy shots, etc. This is because Plano West coach (and former SMU player) David Piehler wants the kids to "just have fun."

Whats impressive is that he probably scored alot of points against double teams and special defenses. Of course the 4A and 5A guys get double teamed too, but most of the stars usually play on strong teams like Desoto, Lincoln or Skyline. I doubt Matt Williams really has much help at TCA-Addison which makes his performances against the decent 5A schools even more impressive. And, he made his team competitive in most games that I saw the box scores for. Its not like he was scoring 40 but his team was losing by 40 to the big schools.

I also noticed his HS team is right at the bottom of team defense statistic, so he'll have plenty to work on once he gets here.

44 - Carr. Ranchview
29 - Idabel (#1 in Oklahoma)

Glancing thru last nights 5A box scores, Mav, I noticed most losing teams did not score 61 points. I think he could play every night in DFW 5A.

Hopefully he will bring that gunslinger attitude to Moody next season!

at 6'2" he's not as tall as many college shooting guards, but he's tall enough.

He isnt as quick as some guards, but he's fast enough.

He can shoot the lights out, from anywhere on the court.

He's the type of player SMU is missing, a reliable shooter who can drain a shot from anywhere, with regularity. If you remember Chad Allen, he's as good a spot-up shooter as Chad, and better at creating his own shot, and shooting on the move. and he's stronger. Thats who I would compare him to.
