CFN: Taylor Thompson 20th Overall DE

Post by Harry0569 »

20. Taylor Thompson, SMU 6-6, 266 Proj. 6
Positives: A great frame. Played most of his career at around 280, and he lost weight and got even quicker. He can beef back up again without a problem. … Strong. Holds up well and doesn’t get shoved around. Just fine as a 3-4 end. … A run defender. Could turn out to be among the best ends in this draft against the run.

Negatives: Major question marks about his desire. Doesn’t bring the heat on every play. … Not really a pass rusher. Not a speed rusher in any way. … Might need a fire lit under him. He has the tools, but he needs to want it on every play.

I think that's a fair assessment. I've always thought he'd make a pretty good 3-4 DE. I wouldn't be shocked if the hometown team took him in the mid to late rounds. I'm also still scratching my head as to why he didn't get an invite to the combine???

Agreed. I thought for sure we would see him at the combine. And, I was really excited to see him perform

He's down to 266? Isn't that what he weighed as a sophomore? Wasn't he in the 290s at one point?

Interesting that they see him as a 3-4 end. I thought he would be a DE in the 4-3 or MAYBE an OLB in the 3-4.

i don't think he has the speed for an OLB.

This is good, as most of it is "coachable." You always want coaches/GMs to look at the negatives on a guy and say "we can fix that."

Question about desire?? Did folks not notice the double teaming?? That he, and our d-line played in front of a LB strong D? TT given some extra coaching will make a fine NFL player.

Honestly, we had some people on here question the desire of the entire team at points last year.

It's good that those are his scouted negatives because coaches all think that they will be the one to fix that.

He's gonna get a shot. I think he'll make the best of it.
