Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.I know Stallion is not going to like what I'm about to say. Recruiting is very important, but as we saw with Doh, you can be a great recruiter and a lousy bench coach and that turns into losing records. We need a guy who can build a program and win games. We can't accept a guy who gets in great talent, but can't coach them to victory. Tonight we'll see if John Calipari is all recruiter, okay coach, but can't win the big one. We know that Bill Self is a great coach already in a school that's easy to recruit for. So, we need a guy who can recruit, but first get the team we have to play like winners.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

i sense trouble in paradise. sutton or some young up and comer (ask coop for details) may be in the bullpen.
Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.It's been more than five weeks since Doherty was fired and we still don't have a coach secured yet. Actually, it has been a lot longer than five weeks since everyone knew Doherty would not be around long before the season ended. Ooops... looks like we lost our window of opportunity for recruiting. Hope the new coach likes the team he will be inheriting from last year.
Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.Right now we don't technically have a space in our recruiting class-do we? I fully realize that some may be run off or released-but were we even actively recruiting for the Spring signing date? I'm more surprised that our Fall signees haven't bailed yet-they are the ones who might get screwed. In any event June Jones was basivcally left with 10 recruiting days before signing date-we are not really in that type of WTF emergency stage. Might end up hiring coaches who have evaluated/have relationships with some of these kids already too.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.Totally agree Stallion. I believe we have one open spot currently available. However, we're at a disadvantage since the coaches could have spent the last several weeks evaluating existing talent on the team, and making any moves they feel are necessary, including bringing a couple of talented, impactful JC transfers.
Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.Here's a novel idea...hire a coach.
We're going round and round on this goose chase when a quality coach with a solid history in Scott Sutton is avaiable. But no we just have to find a way to make the routine tirelessly complex and draining. Based on everything I've read, the problem with this search is search is that it appears that not everyone wanted the same things out of it. We had/have different agendas working here leading to a conflict in which one segment would not be happy with another's approach. It's become more grab-bag than systematic. In short, no united front. Thus, we're in Day 36 of this thing. And if the Brown thing blows up...what then? I really believe that if the power brokers want a big name, Brown is the last shot at that.
Re: Sense of Urgency Steve O.per espn today at 12:43 Eastern:
Larry Brown said Thursday that nothing had changed in his ongoing negotiations with SMU about becoming the school's next men's basketball coach. Brown, speaking by phone from his home in Philadelphia, told ESPN.com's Andy Katz that he wasn't discouraged by the process. He said his agent, Joe Glass, and SMU athletic director Steve Orsini are simply trying to do the right thing for each side. http://espn.go.com/dallas/ncb/story/_/i ... coach-says
