Va Tech fires Seth Greenberg

I clearly don't know the nature of the talks between Orsini and Greenberg, but I would feel very bad for him if he decided to reject any interest by SMU thinking that he was safe at VT.

Does this mean Seth is coming down to be an asst with LB?

That sure would be interesting. Also wonder if Benford is the top choice and we are waiting on what NT decides? Jankovich was mentioned in a question today and Brown said something about recruiting, but assume he meant recruiting for his current position and not us!

Article about NT search that mentions Benford is here:

Greenberg's stock has come down. Let's do this right and not panic.

Completely agree with this. Not sure what the deal is with Greenberg, but if VT felt the need to can him out of the blue, there might be more to this story then is currently out there. Let's not annoint him just yet.

How do you know that SO ever talked to Greenberg? My understanding is that we never had any interest.

They spoke and Seth reached out to us via Braine, The reality of Seth is that he's a slash & burn type coach. Rejuvenates programs, but scorches the earth behind him the whole way. The current AD @ Va Tech is ill, and it was thought Greenberg would last through next year. Any new AD wants a revenue hire, and Beamer isn't going anywhere. Anyway, Greenberg has had Doherty like turnover in his staff these past few, and just lost 3 staffers this offseason. Simply, they decided to go a new direction, as opposed to hiring a new staff for a pseudo lame-duck coach. We did the opposite a few years ago when we hired Mangino & Hobbie.

Don't have a clue, but you don't suppose he was trying to lever the SMU opportunity to get a raise at Va Tech? It is quite often the case that getting interest from another school is the only way a coach can get a raise or a contract extension.

I don't know about a raise. My impression was that he was trying to use SMU to just save his job and make VaTech think he was wanted elsewhere. I don't know that he wanted more money (any more than each of us does) so much as he wanted to be viewed as "in demand," thereby convincing VaTech to keep him.

Oops.

I think the ad hoped we would hire him. When that didn't happen ...

My take is that Orsini never considered Greenberg. I base my conclusion on the fact that VA Tech suddenly lost 3 key assistant coaches and word quickly spread in basketball circles that things were not good in Blacksburg. I would guess that the exit interviews with these 3 assistants had an alarming and decisive impact on his sudden firing. I am sure that Orsini was made aware of these concerns during all of his involvement with the NCAA selection committee where he was in daily contact with all the key coaches and AD in the game who know what is going on in every program. This logically explains why Greenberg early on denied any contact by or interest in SMU. It would be interesting to really know what was going on there that cause his sudden dismissal.
