Quinton JohnsonRivals reports he visited SMU last week. "Everything was nice over there. I like their program and its definitely one I am considering. I am still looking for a visit to Iowa St. and LSU but I have not been hearing from them lately." SMU's only other rivals would appear to be Grambling, Texas Southern and Nichols St. I wonder if there is more than meets the eye with this recruit and how it appears he'ls looking at Division 1AA schools. Rivals lists GPA at 3.4 though.
it looks like Houston backed off of him. Its a strange situation when you have a Big 12 school interested, but only SMU from the D-1 Southwest schools. Seems like Tulsa would want him and try to steal him just because SMU was interested. I'm kidding, but thats how its seemed this recruiting season.
Johnson did visit SMU, and by all accounts the visit went extremely well. He likes SMU, and the SMU coaches like him. At this point, it's a numbers game. Depending on how many scholarships the coaches end up giving, he still might well end up at SMU. Houston backed off because of other priorities. They like Johnson, but they already have four OLs committed (Carl Barnett/Dickinson, Jerrod Butler/Allen, Matt Hart/Huffsmith and Justin Washington/Port Arthur). By all reports, UH's shift recruiting focus shift has nothing to do with Johnson's ability. He had a good season, and has a big, strong, relatively mature body -- he has the power often seen in players who are 20 or 21 years old. Very good player who could step in earlier than many OL prospects.
I thought we already HAD offered him.
Is that not true? I'd love to add one more big fella. Especially one who's on some state top 100 lists.
SMU versus Texas Southern? Seriously? That's not much of a decision, is it? I don't mean to bad-mouth TSU at all -- I don't know anything about the place. But if you have a chance to go to a school with the academic reputation of SMU and play for a team that's moving to a better conference and seems (we hope) poised to take significant steps forward .... is there really a choice to be made?
What's his academic status like?
Here is some info. on Johnson that even Stallion hasn't provided:
Pre-season Lemming rated 3 stars, and the 17th best OL in the state (matches well with Allison who is 7th rated, Enright who is 19th rated, and Nigh, who is rated as a lineman to watch). "Here's a player to really keep your eye on. He's gott enormous size, good strength, surprising quickness, and a great attitude. On film is a very good athlete with good intensity and he's a player who will work to keep his blocks. He shows very good range for a 310 pounder. GPA is over 2.5 and benches 310." Hope we have room for him should he choose us. Otherwise, we need to make room for him!
