Re: AD search
The new AD will need to be very smart and effective in moving us successfully into the Big East, while helping the conference benefit from all the new FB members,as well SMU.
Our move continues to feel on target for us. A couple of years ago, we were lamenting our status and situation. Today, SMU has an opportunity to distinguish itself in more than FB by joining a national and more eastern oriented league.
Kukos to Turner, who is successfully creating a much stronger and national brand for SMU. Imagine all our teams performing in major markets across the country. Our academic, financial and athletic circumstances appear more robust. More to the point, we will be uniquely positioned in Texas and the Southwest to be a national player, differentiated from the regional orientation of our traditional peers. The Big 12 has obvioius appeal, but any flirtation with that idea is missplaced. The Big East creates for us an opportunity to be the most attractive private university for Texans and students from all over the country.
The reported rumors of launching Men's and Women's Lacrosse is a perfect example of matching our future with this national brand and orientation. The new AD will need to deliver the leadership to exceed expectations on this move. Rice may be stronger academically, UT/Okla are bigger athletically, TCU will prosper in the Big 12, but SMU will be unique in the metroplex andTexas as a nationally known and attractive university for all the above reasons. Embrace and prosper in the BE!

Overlooked in all this is that Orsini's right hand man, Mike Vaught, apparently left the minute Orsini was canned. I'm torn on Orsini's exit, but based on the rumor mill, losing Vaught makes the place better right away.

That's a pretty well-done post, water pony.

I second the post by Water Pony. I have always wanted to see SMU rise to prominence as a university and the BE gives SMU an association with schools that would make SMU more highly regarded in terms of its academic model. We will be regarded by the nation as far less provincial.
