SMU paying players vs PSU playing with little boys
So, back in 80's SMU paid players and received the "Death Penalty". And yesterday Penn St. got 4 years prob. for raping young boys? WTH is going on in this world. And yes I know that they also got slapped with a $60 million fine, which is chump change to any major school like Penn St. And yes I know about all the other sanctions that came along with their 4 years prob. BUT, what I don't know or understand is why the NCAA says it's worse to pay players than it is to rape young boys. NCAA, you might just say you dropped the ball when you handed out this one~

The NCAA doesn't want to hurt all the teams PSU had to play, or themselves. That's a sell out for Indiana and you're costing the B10 money if PSU isn't there. Not saying I agree with any of that BS but my guess is like always with the NCAA, it comes down to money for them and their members. Not what should happen or what's fair. But they do a heck of a job trying to tell you this is "new" death penalty.
Take a quick look at FoxSports.com's article comparing the punishments between SMU and PSU. Makes you want to punch some one from the NCAA directly in their uterus.

And for the record, only one person was convicted of "raping little boys". PSU did not rape anyone. But they did apparently cover up the fact they had a known pedophile running around and using their facilities. The definition of lack of institutional control.

Just because the word "death penalty" is not associated with the penalties does not mean it isn't a bigger punishment.

Thanks for the link. Good article to see the penalties. As it has been said many times, PSU will come back because they won't hire a Kenneth Pye.

Did you read that article that compares the two penalties? It is not even close. It is just barely worse than what USC got.

You are right, the fact that the sanctions are less significant means it isn't a bigger punishment.

PSU will be back on track in less than 20 years. Much better than SMU.

I heard one radio commentator saying that for SMU, it was worse because we compete against pro sports entertainment dollars and by folding up the program we became even less relevant to DFW than we already were. PSU is a large state institution and basically is the main game in town for all of Central PA. Totally different situations. They get more people to spring game than we get for games vs. Rice.

Its also the State University of Pennsylvannia. They will rally the State for the program and in future years as sanctions abate there will be a lot of pressure to rebuild the program.

They won't even have to try to "rebuild". I'm sure the $60 million will magically reappear somehow since most of their legislature are PSU grads or supporters. A few blue chip Pennsylvania kids will go to PSU and be seen (and worshiped) as heroes. The whole thing is just disgusting.

Re: SMU paying players vs PSU playing with little boys
I'm just tired of hearing commentators say they will be a FCS level school. Even with only 15 scholarships they will pull much higher quality recruits than any FCS school, 75% on non-BCS schools and still 25% better than their direct competition in BCS schools. They will be around the .500 mark for the next 4-5 years. Wow, how tough the NCAA was on them. It will have schools like Indiana paying for the death penalty.
Only the true freshmen from this season and older will not see bowl games. They can start recruiting next year the fact that they will get 1 if not 2 shots at bowls for the incoming freshmen.
They still get the BCS money and conference money. And when they get to year 5, it will be all systems go on reloading. How much did the NCAA sanctions slow down USC?
This is a farce, that the media is peddling to the masses. Don't worry most of the masses will soak it in like its the worse thing since 911*. Or at least to PSU fans it is. The reality is this is about protecting the $$$ for the conference and the NCAA. Losing PSU to the death penalty would cause too much economic collateral. Sad, that's what it always comes down to, money. Who cares about wins and losses? As long as our school/conference makes more money we ultimately win. Who cares about moral integrity, protecting the innocent and just plain doing the right thing? As long as we are making money non of that matters. Will just pay simple lip service to the concepts.
It's simply embarrassing.
*By the way the 911 reference comes from this: http://deadspin.com/5928585/penn-state- ... nto-towers
It was not just some terrible comment I made, but rather what at least one PSU fan thinks.
