Greetings from a Baylor fan

Postby True Colors » Mon Jul 08, 2002 3:34 am

Nice board you guys have here.

Greetings from a Baylor fan. Even though I am a BU alum, I am also a Dallas resident, and therefore try to follow the SMU sports teams whenever possible. Unfortunately, the morning news doesn't usually cover the ponies all that well, so I was hoping that you guys could provide me with some insight into the current state of affairs with the Mustang football program.

My question is this.... how do you guys expect to fare in general under your new coach Phil Bennet, and more specifically, what are the expectations for this season in particular?

I usually like to come see SMU play once or twice a year in basketball, and would do the same in football if you could start winning. That new stadium of yours is pretty sweet(I'm a big fan of on campus facilities).

Good luck in 2002.

OK, I'm really not trying to start a fight here - but a Baylor fan wants to see SMU win before coming to games? I hope you're not wasting the gas to cruise down to Waco if winning football is a priority.

Sorry - not picking a fight. Just seemed like an odd request.

And regarding your question about the Ponies under Coach Bennett: I say we go 6-6.

Allow me to explain,

First off, I wasn't trying to stir anything up over here. In fact, I thought my original post was quite diplomatic and friendly.

The reason I came by is that football season is rapidly approaching, and I was hoping to get some information. After looking over your schedule, I was considering going to a game this year(most likely Tx Tech).

Secondly, I am well aware that my own Baylor team is a joke these days. Everyone knows that. But I still follow them because..... well..... that's my school

You see, I am a true fan of Baylor, but only a casual fan of SMU. As a casual fan, my interest level will rise or fall, based on the entertainment value of the product---very much the same way that a lot of other people feel in regards to the Mavericks or Rangers.

I cheer for SMU for three main reasons.
A) It's a private school
B) It's in my home town
C) The red, white, and blue uniforms look cool(which probably explains why I like SMU better than TCU. Something's not right with those gawdy purple getups they wear over in cow town)

Now your talking!!! We hope that all our games will be much more intertaining (winning) in the near future. Hope you will then come to more than just one game a year. We need Dallas to get behind us and support SMU. Obviously there will be some games in the future where your loyalty will not allow you to support us, but beyond that we welcome your attendance and support. Thanks.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

The eternal optimist, I'm pegging this year's effort at 8-4.

As far as entertainment value goes, I understand there's a A BUNCH of extra goodies planned for football this year. Should be some really terrific stuff. For example, for the Navy game, we're supposed to have an F18 flyby and Staubach and Dickerson will supervise the coin toss.

There's also a concert planned after one game and rumblings of a top flight commedian too. Regardless, ALL the home games should be well worth the small price of admission.
