More JJ Fun Facts

Post by SoCal_Pony »

JJ's record at SMU is 25-31, including 4-20 against teams with winning records.

As disappointed as most are with this season, Sagarin still has us ranked #74 in their FB rankings. I went back over the past 4 years of Sagarin. To put some perspective on this:

If SMU were to defeat a team ranked #74, it would be JJ's 6th highest-quality win here, behind only TCU and Pitt in 2011, Tulsa in 2010, and ECU and Nevada in 2009. Let that one sink in for awhile.

The average Sagarin ranking for the 25 teams we have defeated is #108. Here are the teams ranked #108 each year during JJ's reign at SMU. A 5-7 Akron team, a 3-9 Wyoming team, and 3 Division AA teams, James Madison, Illinois State and South Dakota State.

Of JJ's 25 wins, 10 have came against teams that are either Division AA or had Sagarin rankings between #127 (Rice in 2010) and #182 (Memphis 2011).

Facts are considered opinions in JJ supporters eyes. You should print that out and go Martin Luther and nail that on RGT and Hart's doors because like stacy's ad say: you are burnin money...

I could live with this season if JJ was recruiting. After the ASU debacle, it has been pathetic. How anyone could feel good about our chances entering BE is beyond me.

That's what the sunshiners won't acknowledge. The beatings this year are directly tied to his recruiting.

I am hardly happy with our play, but it is his recruiting that bothers me the most.

Quality post. June is done here. The "June brought our program back" posts are the June version of the "Bennett is a good Christian man" posts from when he was done here. All the other posts like "these are college kids, don't criticize them!" are the same.

Interesting thread. I really do think Jones can Coach even though I abolutely detest the Run N Done but 3 of the last 4 Coaching hires to me were basically shooting the bird to SMU chances of building a strong program in Dallas Texas. I get it he wanted some of his home-boys when he came from Hawaii to build his program-but surely he had to have understood by Year 3 that he was struggling in recruiting except for Klemm and perhaps Reinbold (although Reinbold is definitely small time non-BCS all the way). Just kept on hiring his old buddies with no connections to Texas AND no recruiting expertise.

Do you think the public battles over admissions early on made him say "fine I will not recruit"? I base this on all the fighting and outrage early on that has now totally disappeared.

Or since he never recruited in Hawaii, and no one called him on it since he had a built in excuse, he does not like to recruit. Also, seems to be an NFL mentality of playing with the players given by the GM. Note to June, you have to get players in college see LB staff.

I like June. The offense has definitely been frustrating (this year even more than the previous 4), but I still think he was the right hire in 2008. He turned the program around and even gave us some things to cheer about (2009 Hawaii Bowl, 2011 Compass Bowl, 2011 TCU game). But I think we're just playing out the string at this point. What does June have left on his K. . .this season and next? I really don't see him being extended beyond that. Hart is going to want to put his stamp on this thing and take it to the next level. But you have to walk before you can run, and in 2008 we were laying in the gutter with two broken legs, a herniated disk, and empty bottles of Old Grand Dad laying around! June got us upright, sobered us up, and moved us out of the football dark ages. Now Hart and the COC will have to figure out how to really make us run. Frankly, I'm looking forward to it. In the past, you knew that a new coach at SMU was just a lamb to the slaughter. After June though, the next coach will inherit something that he can actually work with.

And, unlike Pro coaches, who cook but do not buy the groceries, college coaches do the shopping, pick the ingredients on game day, write the cook book and prepare the meal for the players AND fans. This is college ... so passion and love for the school is very important for everyone. We can't go next store for better food, we come home every night for a home cooked meal(especially on Saturday's).

This is an interesting question. I've wondered the same thing myself. No idea what ended up happening with that, but June has never really been the same since. I'm wondering if he got seriously slapped down and started pouting.

You gotta keep restocking the pantry and as this staff has a bunch of middle-aged guys they start kicking back and playing golf more often and realizing what is most important in life isn't football after all but family and those precious grandkids so you try to make up for it and get the attitude that they have proven themselves and recruits should come to them...and they do except it is ones who aren't being recruited or aren't being recruited by the top 85 D1 schools or there are questions about grades or character so you tell yourself you will get those guys and your "superior" coaching skills will make up the difference and giving these guys a second chance will work....after all back in '83 it worked and Mouse did it in '75. Times change fast and you better change fast or it's adios! While you are on the back nine or beach some young ambitious guy like you were 35 years ago is tweeting and working long hours to convince that next recruit AND HIS PARENTS AND GRANDMA that his university cares the most. Funny how the luckiest coaches always turn out to be the hardest workers too.
