Pachall Suspension Raises this Question for me...
Listening to everyone talk about how a definite NFL draft pick screwed everything up with all his shenanigans begs the question - how has a defensively based team like TCU (almost) put 2 quarterbacks in the NFL in the past 5 years - while our "QB Guru" can't even find someone who's fit to play D1 football??? Insanity.

I came away excited about coaching Ryan Leaf. He is going to be a franchise guy."

I think you have a good question, But, just about every major college also missed on those two quarterbacks--it wasn't just SMU. June wasn't even recruiting for SMU when the first on committed to TCU, I believe it was also true for Andy Dalton as well. I think Bennett was still in charge when he committed to TCU. Altough I am not certain.

Since we are evaluating coach Jones on things he hasn't done - Why hasn't Coach Jones won the Nobel Peace Prize?SMU2007 wrote:Listening to everyone talk about how a definite NFL draft pick screwed everything up with all his shenanigans begs the question - how has a defensively based team like TCU (almost) put 2 quarterbacks in the NFL in the past 5 years - while our "QB Guru" can't even find someone who's fit to play D1 football??? Because he's not being paid 2 mil. a year to do so. He is being paid to develop a [deleted] quarterback and get this offense moving for once. He is also expected to recruit at a higher level. Just to clarify why people have been upset around here in case you missed that..West Coast Johnny wrote:Since we are evaluating coach Jones on things he hasn't done - Why hasn't Coach Jones won the Nobel Peace Prize?SMU2007 wrote:Listening to everyone talk about how a definite NFL draft pick screwed everything up with all his shenanigans begs the question - how has a defensively based team like TCU (almost) put 2 quarterbacks in the NFL in the past 5 years - while our "QB Guru" can't even find someone who's fit to play D1 football??? Yea, I'm just stirring some shoot up by throwing out a bigger red herring than the original poster. Point is Jones job is to win games - not develop pro players. He's done OK winning games (better than the other SMU coaches). He ain't perfect and many posters on this board don't like him, but I didn't see SMU winning bowl games against Nevada & Pitt before he got here.CalallenStang wrote:Come on. By the way, I didn't know Jones had a record of developing pro QBs? I never saw Colt Brennan or Tommy Chang in the NFL - but that didn't stop Hawaii from going to the Sugar bowl. Fact that Gilbert, Padron etal will never be in the NFL is just a big red herring.
Re: Pachall Suspension Raises this Question for me...
This point brings out the question of how coaches get reputations, especially in the media, that are not accurate. June has a reputation in the media that is often repeated as "an offensive guru who developes qb's" but I don't see it. Kind of reminds me of the reputation Fry had at SMU, NTSU and Iowa but he won games with his defenses more than offenses. I think both will have greater reputations as program builders with a knack for hiring good staffs. Patterson is noted for defense but his strength is putting together an overall program with an emphasis in all areas and he rules over it with profanity-laced tirades that strikes fear in every player and coach. June's value is in the name recognition and his stature as a well-liked and respected coach who can put together a staff and run the over-all program. He obviously isn't attracting or recruiting top players to SMU which is a major disappointment, especially on the offensive side where most of his top qb's have been transfers. The players they are recruiting, esp defense, are being developed though. I just wish we would get back to developing guys who can play at a high D1 level and put all that talk about getting them in the NFL on the back-burner and in the media guide only.

Simple, whomever is doing the evaluating and developing of QBs over there is better at it than June. Same goes for many other coaches in FBS without the "QB guru" moniker attached to them.

Re: Pachall Suspension Raises this Question for me...
His job IS to win games, and he has done that. Not as many as I'd like, or most of the people here, but a huge improvement over the previous regimes. The Rusty Burns comment is interesting, since many on here were convinced he had never seen a football game before when the offense struggled, but now he's suddenly a genius? I don't see how he can be faulted on the Ryan Leaf thing, either, since just about every coach, scout and media "expert" said he was one of the top two players in the draft that year. Some liked him over Manning, some liked Manning over him, but everyone realized he had a lot of physical gifts. What wasn't known was that he was a lazy, disinterested jerk who destroyed the karma on the practice field and in the locker room
The fact is that some of it is coaching, some of it is talent, some of it is matchups. In Cleveland, Bill Belichick was an idiot, remember? Stick him in New England with an owner and a franchise QB, and suddenly he's Lombardi II. Fans wanted the Cowboys to fire Landry before he got his contract extension, and he worked out OK. I don't think he has done a perfect job, or anything close to it, but I'm glad he's here, because I remember the previous 20 years.
