Proud of This Team

Post by shadowman »

Yes, I am really not a big June Jones fan, I have always hated his offense, I think he is very lazy and subpar in his recruiting, and I thought it was despicable the way he did not embrace the hilltop, even after all that money we gave him.

But, The one thing I do like about June, is he never gets mad, he keeps his wits, and he never cusses or raises his voice to a player. That is exactly what we needed after that tough loss last week. I think that was a big part of our quick turnaround, he wasn't mad and let everyone get over it quickly and go out Thursday and do what they needed to do.

I think we got a lot of momentum there last night and could actually win out and right after that Tulane loss, June was exactly the right coach for that moment to get the team over it and move forward.

Our front seven is outstanding on defense, Zach Line is as good as any runningback in the country, and our young offensive line has been superb. Gilbert looks to be improving, and with Darius back, maybe our receivers can starting getting some separation and get open.

June still has not recruited well, and that is a big minus, but I am really coming around on his coaching and I think the team really likes to play for him. Hell, we gave him a bad rap last week on that field goal. Go up 6 and make them get a touchdown to beat us...they did, but I cannot really fault that call.

I still think the best thing for SMU is for him to retire at the end of the season and bring in a splash hire that can generate some recruiting momentum, but I am not gonna knock his offense or his play calling any more. I think he still gets us to a bowl game and maybe even still a shot at a CUSA championship.

I was too [deleted] a good man and a pretty good coach. He deserves dings on his recruiting, but maybe that will improve.

well said, the team really stood up last night and June deserves credit for that. He does have a steady hand. I still question the field goal call at tulane though, especially because our secondary was down to the 4th string and running on fumes and he had to know it. Nothing wrong with questioning coaching tactics.

He also should have gone for two after that TD that put us down 20-16.

He does have a steady hand and a level head, unfortunately he often makes poor decisions and has been a poor recruiter. Of course he has strengths as a coach, but I think it's time for a change. June has gotten us here but has plateaued, time for someone else to lead us into the BE.

Well said. I'm proud of this team, too. When too many of us were ready to give up, the Ponies didn't.
Way to go, Mustangs!

I don't question the late FG at Tulane, I question the entire first half and the pre-game preparation against Tulane. As I have said, this team is not talented enough to assume any wins, it has to beat every single team it faces. My feeling is that the team is too cocky and gets that from June. That said, Tulane is the worst team in college football and a loss to them is inexcusable. I have always liked June Jones as head coach. I think that when he has good players he looks like a genius and his teams are incredibly fun to watch. The problem has been the recruiting. Recruiting continues to be a problem and will remain that way unless we overhaul his staff. I would love to keep June Jones for the next 10 years if he overhauls his staff to bring in young energetic assistants with Texas ties. Otherwise, I hope he wins out and rides off into the sunset. By doing so he either positions the team to be competitive in the Big East or leaves as the coach that transformed SMU from a perennial bottom 10 team to a perennial bowl team. Like him or not, that is something to be proud of and to me would be deserving of a prominent place in Heritage Hall.

If JJ is fired, or it's perceived by the general public that he was forced to retire SMU instantly
regains it's former status as the #1 COACHES GRAVEYARD in the NCAA :!: :!: :!:

C of C will have to offer $2 mil / year just to get an average assistant coach like Bennett was to
accept an offer. Everyone, and his dog told Bennett not to come here :!:
May the forth be with us.

Disagree.

SMU is completely different to when Bennett was leaving and JJ was coming in. JJ did what he wanted to do. Recruiting restrictions are no where near what they were with Bennett and any other coach before him since the DP.

JJ is getting paid 2 million to win us championships. He hasn't done that. He's peaked at SMU and every non-SMU fans (and most SMU fans now) knows this.

He's done what he could, thanks for the 3 bowl trips (hopefully 4 after this season). But time to move on to better things as we move into a much better conference.

Let's get rid of coach King while we're at it. I think he's peaked too :!:

Again, why are you comparing a high school coach to a college coach? The two men are complete opposites of each other and are on two completely different levels of football.

Good for June, he rallied the team after a loss that should have never happened. Please don't lay another egg against Memphis.

Because you would've fired Ron Meyer after he went 16 - 27 - 1 his first 4 years, and Hayden Fry
after he went 11 - 28 - 1 his first 4 years.

i see both sides of this argument. I lean to forcing JJ to make a few adjustments in his recruiting staff and letting him finish his contract at least. If he won't do it, then it comes to a head. You never know who you can hire until December of the year you make a change, depends on what happens at 100 other schools and what the star assistants are quietly promised or given to stay where they are.

Except when Ron Meyer had that record he was working his [deleted] off recruiting (and perhaps bending a rule or two) - and June waits for his 70 yr old cronies to refer the sons of their buddies. Big difference.

I don't think anyone here doesn't see june's positives. It's just that at the next level his weaknesses are going to be even more exposed and most of us can see that, and would like it rectified now instead of having to live through it.

Won't happen. We're gonna have to live with him and live through it. Next year is gonna be scary.
