I think if that happened June would be gone. Everyone expected a little rebuilding this season.

Looking at next year's team, I think our young o-linemen are actually good. I think we will see a bump in the offensive line performance next season.

At WR, DJ will step in for DJ and do fine, and I think Dieter and Stewart will be ready to win the outside receiver spots and give us a step up in talent there.

At RB we will miss Zach, but between the UT transfer, his brother, Wembley and Nlemchi we will be OK.

Defensively, we will be significantly improved in the secondary. The backup linebackers are really good and will step in and play well. Biggest concern is d-line. I like what we have at NT, but at end, Barnes, Wood, Smith, etc are supposed to be really good but I haven't seen them really make plays yet. Wood got knocked around a bit yesterday.

I think we are a lot more consistent on offense next season, and the defense all depends on how ready our linemen are.

I would expect us to be improved next season and compete well in the Big East.

Jason- sorry but I disagree. We lose a lot of talent on the D line and don't have many players with experience there. Also, we will be playing BCS teams not the 'cupcakes' of cusa.. We saw early this year how prepared we are to play BCS level teams. I think next yr. even Memphis will be greatly improved. I will be very surprised if we win more than 2-3 games next yr. (based on the premise that jj might still be here).

Not for people with a clue who know you won't get 10 turnovers every game. We have zero offense. It has only played well enough to beat UTEP.

We might be improved but that improvement won't be reflected in the record. We definitely will not find 6 wins to make a bowl game.

By year 5 the team should be hitting their stride not rebuilding.

There are a lot of programs that take a small step back in year 4 or 5 and then push forward again. Natural cycle. You get a boost in recruiting because of a new staff, then they struggle the first year, so recruiting falters, then they have success and recruiting comes back. It leads to a small step back year when that first class graduates. In our case, we had a gap in recruiting linemen and that hurt us.

I think everyone is on the same page here - we all wanted to become a dominant CUSA team. Instead, we became a good CUSA team. This year we are an average CUSA team at this point in the season.

This staff is going to be judged by how well they do in the first year of the Big East. I agree that there are a lot of unknowns on both sides of the line. I do expect improvement at WR and qB, though. And I think the o-line will actually be significantly better. On the D-line, I think Wright is really the only one of the young guys who has made some plays this year, and not been just a guy for depth.

The young players on both sides of the line next season are going to make a huge impact on whether the coaching staff sticks around. Two below average seasons won't be acceptable by anyone at the university; the donors have made it quite clear that the success of the football and basketball teams is really, really important to them. The administration won't let us slide back into oblivion again.

JasonB, I know you are a Jones apologist and try to sway opinion with subtlety. What you are trying to do now is sway the general public to be accepting towards June being here next year. Bottom line is he may not be back next year no matter how you spin it.

I agree with some of this:

I seriously doubt Coach J is going anywhere. I also don't think he should. He might, he might not. But I'd bet he's back.

The offensive line worries me a lot for next year. We'll be bigger, but we'll be younger ... a lot younger. This year's line is a patchwork group, in the sense that they hadn't played together (or almost at all) before, but we do have three seniors in there. Take a guess at next year's line: surely Gottschalk and Lasecki start, but after that? Maybe more talent, but a lot younger. The job Bob Palcic has done this year teaching these guys has been exceptional, and he's going to need to do so again next year.

I hope you're right about the running game next year. I hope the transfer pans out, but I hope Wimbley, Prescott Line and Nlemchi are good enough to really make it crowded. I also hope Jared Williams makes it all the way back so we can cheer for him again.

The WRs need to be significantly improved next year. Jeremy Johnson has been the best of the bunch this year, and I'd like to see Darius Joseph get a lot more playing time. At the start of the year, I balked at the idea of moving Ty Law to WR when he returns from his greyshirt, but after the year the receivers have had this year, if he's the best of the group, put him on offense. But we have a million WRs on the roster, and some of those guys had to play defense in high school, so some of them should move to the secondary to shore things up over there and provide better depth. I also am one of those who expected big things, maybe even this year, from Colin Lagasse, so I'll be interested to see what he can do in the spring.

The strength of the defense still will be in the front seven, but it will be even more in the linebackers next year, and that's after we lose JG, Reed, Rogers and Worthen. The defensive line will take serious hits with the loss of Margus, Grenier, Pitt and Spike, and needs to be re-loaded.

If SMU does not finish the season strong the June Jones Era might be over whether you think it should or not.

Of course it MIGHT be. I just doubt it will, and don't think it should. I'm making no claims of knowing Rick Hart or what he's thinking.

We lost to a better team yesterday, and I don't think that is grounds for dismissal. No, I'm not satisfied with where we are, and no I'm not always on board with Coach J, but I do think we're in a much better place than we were before he got here, I do enjoy bowl games, and I don't think anyone -- administrator, coach or player -- should be removed unless a better replacement can be had.

I did not say anything about dismissing Jones after yesterdays game and I don't appreciate you implying that I did. I SAID that if SMU does not finish strong the June Jones Era might over regardless of if YOU think it should or not. Also, SMU did not just lose to a better team that they got blown out by 25 points that was also better prepared and better coached. I see you are one of the JJ to the death supporters that do not think we can do better that JJ and has the beaten wife syndrome.

OMG, forgive me. My comment about yesterday's game was not in direct response to your comment, but I'm not inclined to beg for mercy, either. If I ruffled any feathers because my post wasn't clearly laid out (perhaps in outline form next time), I humbly apologize. There were some calling for O'Leary's head last year after we whacked UCF, but it looks like they made the right call in sticking with him.

As I recall, several on here predicted a middle-of-the-road record this year, and now it looks like those people might have been right. I wish we were 9-0, too, but the fact is that we're not. I am hoping, however, that we beat Southern Miss next week, and will be there with my family to enjoy watching my team.

No, I am not a "JJ to the death" guy, nor will I apologize for supporting him or for supporting the team. I think overall, he has made the team better. I have been to three bowls in my life, and they all happened in the last three years. I'm not suggesting for a second that he's the only coach I'll support, but I will always support the team and will support him until I see a reason not to.

And don't start with the "satisfied" stuff. I'm not satisfied with the team's record, but considering what we lost from last year, I'm not surprised, either. We all want the team to be better each week and each year, and I'm no different. There is talent on the team and we have a chance to win more games, hopefully starting against Southern Miss.

You seem to be taking the ad absurdum defense tactic (typical June to the death supporter tactic) regarding what I am saying. Nobody said we should be 9-0 but losing to Tulane and not just losing but getting blown out by UCF should make anyone concerned. That is unless you are buddy buddy with some of the coaching staff and are trying to redirect the reality of the situation. He has to have a strong finish or your attempts might be futile. I hope JJ has the team better prepared to play this week.
