Random Non-SMU Question

Well, I'm looking at the calander and I don't see a men's bball game until Dec. 15 and no football until Dec. 24. So in the interest of killing time, I have a non-SMU question that I'd like to get people's take on. Here it is:

What the hell is up with UT?

How can their football program be in the state it currently is? I just don't get it. My understanding is that 19 of the 45 players UT football signed in 2009-2010 have transferred or otherwise left the program. They literally look bereft of talent at some key positions. UT's defense is horrible and it sure looks like the best QB they had on campus is now playing for SMU. Any insights into what's going on down there?

Poor coaching. In Austin, Mack has earned the nickname, "Mr. February," because of his ability to bring in big recruits, but lack of ability to coach them up in the fall

I have a friend who is a big UT fan and has family in Austin. They are saying it's a legacy coaching problem. They all want Mac, Auggie, and Barnes fired but it won't happen. Also, in regards to recruiting, they are saying that UT doesn't even put the work in. They just see who the other good schools are going after and offering them without even watching them play. One said it eerily feels like the post Darrell Royal era coming on. Acres, can't remember, Makovich. Anywho, I'm loving it whatever it is.

I know Brown has been criticized for his coaching, but that's always been the case. He was criticized for his coaching (to a lesser extent, granted), in the years UT went to the BCS title game. It seems like the big difference now is that the recruiting has fallen off dramatically. The number of signees who are leaving the program, what appears to be serious talent deficiencies at key positions, and the fact that UT is putting way fewer players into the NFL (I think. Could be wrong) indicate there is something deeper going on than just bad coaching.

I read a quote from some blue-chipper who I think signed with A&M saying that it looked like UT was falling apart right now. Amazing to hear a quote like that from a recruit about UT.

As a UT fan (grad school), the problem boils down to a few things:

1) Vince Young and Colt McCoy covered up significant problems with UT's offensive philosophy. When Gilbert arrived and couldn't function without protection, the offense basically collapsed. Neither Ash nor McCoy II have they playmaking ability to cover up the problems with the O-line and the schemes.

2) At this point, Mack Brown has become a figurehead coach who is a manager - not the brains on offense or defense. The game has passed him by.

3) Talent evaluation: instead of Johnny Football, they got David Ash. Instead of others, they got G. Gilbert. Their 4-5 star OL recruits cannot block anyone.

Mack Brown always was more of a manager than coach. Now he's being exposed for what he is.

True, Mack is more of a manager than a coach, but so are many major college coaches.

The system that Young and McCoy played in has been scrapped, but Digetydog is correct about talent evaluation. Many of the Longhorns four-starred prima donnas have not panned out while more talented prospects were snubbed (Johnny Football grew up wanting to wear burnt orange).

Also, there is a sense of complacency on the 40 acres. The palacial surroundings and rich diet has drained the hunger for winning out of Mack's pampered charges. The 4th quarter nose dive against K-State put that on ample display.

UT has significantly upgraded their assistant coaches over the past two years.

I thought they would be .500 this year, but they have significantly exceeded my expectations; I think they are a year ahead of what they should be.

The real problem they have is horrible line play combined with a lack of a true "difference maker" at the skill positions. For next season, I think they will grow up on the line on both sides of the ball, and at line backer. I believe that you will see a much better, more complete team than you saw this year, and they will win the big 12.

Wide receiver prospect Ricky Seals-Jones has it all narrowed down. With just over two months remaining until national signing day Seals-Jones has slimmed his list down to two schools, Texas A&M and LSU.

The highest rated wide receiver recruit in the nation according to Rivals.com has been seen wearing A&M gloves during his high school games and made an unofficial visit to see A&M take down Missouri on Nov. 24.

He was originally committed to play for Mack Brown at Texas before opening up the process again before his senior season of football at Sealy High School.
