Re: Navy remains committed to BE
SDSU probably needs a western partner/rival to remain interested in the Big East deal, but if BYU is not interested, the Big East needs to find another candidate that wants to go football only and can find a home for it's other sports out west.
I wouldn't rule out UNLV, especially if they could join SDSU in bball and those two could schedule some "non-conference" games with some Big East schools. UNLV might also help the Big East develop a relationship/opportunity with the Las Vegas Bowl for it's western members

The idea that the goddamn Naval Academy goes a damn about 'recruiting' athletes is utterly stupid - this isn't the 1940's. Either the guy is going to make a competent sailer or marine or he isn't; wether he can punt, pass, or kick is irrelevant. Or at least, I hope to heII it is.
What the Naval AD is saying is both true and false; the MWC DID want BSU desperately, they need them to make a bid for an large bid, which they're hoping for. And BSU did ask for ALOT, but they will be on an island, and if the BE thing falls through it could set them and their gains back a decade, with or without the MWC to fall back on.
But BSU has a serious decision to make, one harder than any one else in the conference has: take a MASSIVE gamble on a new conference or keep momentum moving with a conference that is far more stable, makes more geographical sense, and might have future as an AQ (notice I said MIGHT). All I'm saying is that BSU had their reasons.

They had their reasons: $$$. MWC have them a deal no one else in the MWC will get. SDSU will not get the same deal. They are the ones who have a big decision to make.

Re: Navy remains committed to BE
When Navy talks recruiting its not just for sports. A game in Dallas, Houston, Cincinnati, etc., is good recruiting for the Navy at large. People bring their kids to see Navy play especially ex-Navy and USMC. That helps the Navy when they recruit for sailors and seamen as well as jocks at schools in those areas. They can slip a potential recruit a couple of ducats to an SMU/Navy game. And when they go to Philly, Tampa, Hartford and San Diego that helps them with their alums since all of those places have a huge Navy presence and again helps them raise money from alums.

Not a surprise, since they have fewer options, but Memphis AD (ex-San Jose AD) is promoting BE.

Of course the football coaches at the Naval Academy care very deeply about whether a kid can play. What a strange statement.leopold wrote:The idea that the Naval Academy goes a damn about 'recruiting' athletes is utterly stupid - this isn't the 1940's. Maybe we can whine incessantly and draw cute cartoons too.
