Re: New Conference Sports
Do I doom this thread now? We have lots of spring sports to root for, men's and women's tennis. Women's track and Field, equestrian, sailing and of course men's golf and women's golf. We had baseball and the average attendance even when we played Texas, A&M, TCU, Baylor, Rice and UH was about 25 people where the soccer stadium is now. And that was because it was a good place for frat guys to sit and get a tan. Yes, we sucked, but you would think when the big name programs came to town people would still come out to watch. They didn't. So, let's figure out what our new conference wants to do in terms of Olympic sports and go with it. We bring a lot to the table in soccer, swimming, golf, tennis and women's track. If we go out of our zone, we have to plan the right sport to help our bottom line.

Re: New Conference Sports
The fact that LAX is a sport for rich Frat guys is a plus - that is what we do best. Plus LAX is growing faster than any other sport, so if we are going to invest in anything lets invest in the future.
We aren't going to invest in the facilities required to do a baseball team - ever. We can stop talking about that - it isn't going to happen.
There are dozens of very good LAX players in Texas that would prefer to play in texas. Our other key recruiting areas for our student body in general are California and the North east - so that is natural. We would be nationally competitive in short order.
ESD, St Marks, HP, Coppell, St Johns, FWCD - they would all send a player or two and that would help us draw from all those schools. It is a no brainer.

Cowboys are, and always will be, the number 1 most popular in the area- no matter what.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:I don't know how people figure LAX being more fun to watch and would draw a bigger crowd. Rangers and mavs (which seem to be in decline) will be number 1 or 2 most popular in the area.

One good thing LAX has going for it is that it has a relatively lower start up cost compared to baseball. Men's and Women's LAX can be played at Wescott (or Ford for that matter) while baseball (and softball for Title IX purposes) would require two new, expensive facilities

Yes, the Chaparrals became the San Antonio Spurs. And the Dallas Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs thanks to our own Lamar Hunt of SMU.lwjr wrote:They moved to San Antonio.Water Pony wrote:Whatever happened to the Dallas Texans and Chaparrals?

women's beach volleyball. If the NCAA would authorize that, we might not win, but our team would be the most televised.

The NCAA actually does sponsor sand volleyball - but you only get four additional scholarships if you also have an indoor women's volleyball team.EastStang wrote:women's beach volleyball. If the NCAA would authorize that, we might not win, but our team would be the most televised.

Somehow, I became a youth lacrosse coach. Accordingly, I watch my fair share of the sport. I can't imagine we will be adding Div. 1 lacrosse in the next 10-20 years.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Re: New Conference Sports
Women's lacrosse will come before men's. Although Michigan & Jacksonville have recently added men's, the women's game is growing portion of the game at the DI level. Women's lax have recently started at Florida (already a power), USC (will be shortly), and the largest power in the game is Northwestern which is in a market that the high school game is about at the same level as Texas. It's all about the coach. It would be nice to have a power at some sport and lacrosse is much like soccer used to be where the size of the school didn't drive success i.e. Ivies, Service Academies and other smaller schools have had successes.
