ticket sales idea

Why can't we put some sort of booth or stand at the high traffic places around town and sell tickets? Just have an intern take credit cards on an ipad and run it through ticketmaster if need be.

Set up something at Walmart, Target, Central Market, etc etc. We sell merchandise there, why can't we use that to educate 10,000's in the community who visit those stores about the game and sell them tickets? "Hey man, SMU plays Tech on Friday for $35".

I would think you could sell thousands of tickets that way especially for games against decent-named opponents.

Is this heresy?

We can't even get people on the Blvd to go in the stadium. What makes you think the causal shopper at Central Market will want to buy a ticket?

When talking to one of my friends about the tech game, he said he was most concerned about the blvd being on a Friday and when to leave work for it as opposed to the actually getting to the game. That part didnt really seem to matter. I'm with you on this one ECM.

I think it is a good idea. The Blvd to the game issue is entirely different. Put up a kiosk at a busy mall and offer cut rate tickets. Dads following mom and children around during a boring day of back to school shopping may be enticed by some hot chick in a kiosk hawking tickets to a D-2 football game and may just buy some. That is reaching out to the community rather than waiting for them to come to us.

Agreed, completely different group of people between the guy who wants to stay on the blvd and the person who might buy tickets if they ran across a booth.

We need some kind of presence like that to attempt to engage the 10-14000 football fans at the HS stadiums every Friday night in HP, Richardson, Garland, Plano, Allen and McKinney

have some SMU tshirts made up and give them to the people who buy tkts so they have a game day shirt to wear (and/or little SMU footballs for the kids to play with). there are lots of ways to promote SMU but someone will need to get out of the office.

I'm curious how many of the folks on this board forward some of these thoughts along to SMU Athletics? These are some interesting ideas, but on a message board alone they are useless. In the past I have found that the athletics staff is open and in fact pretty eager to help facilitate suggestions that can increase brand exposure. Case in point, my daughter's school does a fundraising auction each year and I sent a note to SMU to see if they would be willing to donate something and they were extremely accommodating (it was toward the end of bball season, so they donated an LB signed ball and 8 ticket vouchers to be used at any time next season). I think we've gotten so entrenched in the "SMU can't ever get it right" mentality that we let some unique ideas simply fade away. Anything folks think of in the area of community outreach and unique marketing should be put out there. You might get a better response than "hmm..", especially if you're willing to do some of the leg work (and I have rarely seen that to be an issue from most of the folks on here).

I agree that creative marketing techniques are a must, but in all honesty, I have trouble giving my extra tickets away. My strategy has always been to offer them to people who are not connected to SMU and are not potential ticket purchasers. I live in Austin but offer the tickets to people I do business with in Dallas and vicinity. Many of them are familiar with SMU football but don't live near the Park Cities and are intimidated by parking regulations etc. They also don't have connections on the Boulevard.

To much forward thinking for SMU to handle. It is like the school does not want to make much of an effort to promote the team.

I agree with you to a point. About a year and a half ago they only had 1 person working ticket sales (Terry Hemme I believe it was, please correct me if I'm wrong my memory isn't the best), and now it looks like they have 6 full time people working ticket sales. Yeah we haven't seen it payoff very much but there's is some effort being put forth.
