Others have stated it...for me it was '78 at Baylor. Probably one of few times a large group of students drove down to Waco -- Ford to Tolbert and Putt Choate stopping nearly everything near him that day. An amazing year (Mustang Mania) where a losing record was exciting (sorry, but it was true that year).

had to pick a "best game" but probably the most satisfying for me was the 1992 Homecoming win against Houston...after that group of over 30 seniors had been whipped 95-21 by the Cougs early in their careers

1989 vs UConn The Miracle on Mockingbird. My first Mustang victory as a student. After the whipping from Rice the week before, this was my first drink of the Kool-Aid....
1999 vs. UTEP. Game itself was a back and forth battle, but after T Thompson sacked the QB to seal the victory and our bowl birth, that was as close to tears as I have seen my father in law and a payoff to match any other after years of suffering in the stands together.

1963 highly ranked Navy and Roger Staubach came into the Cotton Bowl undefeated. The Ponies earned a wild 28 to 27 victory as John Rodrick used his world class speed to beat the Navy DEs and rush for 140 yards on 12 carries. Staubach had 3 passes into the SMU end zone knocked down in the last 12 seconds of the game. Staubach would go on to win the Heisman and Navy would go undefeated the rest of the season and meet Texas in the Cotton Bowl losing to the first great Texas wishbone team.

This was my father's favorite SMU game as well. He was coaching high school football then and his team had an open date that Friday night so he and my mother drove to Dallas to see it (leaving my two-year-old tail in the care of my aunt and uncle). He used to describe this game to my brothers and I in the later years and even showed the film to us from time to time. From what I understand, SMU does not have the complete game film of this one. I should look through his old film reels and see if I can find his copy. Roderick was a beast!

Watching us beat Tulsa last year and Pitt the year before in the BBVA bowl. Wish I could have seen some of the older great games, but before my time.
Does anyone know where you could find game tapes of older games like the one referenced between SMU and Notre Dame referenced by Ponyte?

Miracle on Mockingbird.

SMU should make all the games listed above available on DVD. I would buy them. Even some of the older games like the Rose Bowl, Doak Walker teams, etc. could be "compiled" into an interesting collection. Hire Thaddeus of "30-30 fame to edit and narrate and put these out. Better than watching some summer rerun while waiting for the season to start.

I wish I could have seen the Louise Kelcher show against A$M. And I would have loved to have seen Doak. The highlights of him are something to behold.
I still marvel at all the great games folks have witnessed and listed.
Just to add, though it was killer to watch, the 1980 Holiday Bowl. Sure we lost but that game is consistently list as one of the top 100 college games played of all time.

#1 The defeat of Navy and Staubach #2 the 1983 Cotton Bowl win over Pitt. I also remember the Bobby Leach touchdown against Texas Tech but I didn't see it live. That was a great game and great play to end the game.

Gerry York has a lot of the games archived and available on DVD. I do not remember the site so I apologize for that. I got the DVD of the Bluebonnet Bowl against OU. It is not the whole game but rather highlights but still very memorable to have.

I was at that one too, Stallion. Nothing like Jones Stadium going crazy after the Tech touchdown, followed by silence as the kickoff developed.
SMU-BU in the '66 season, and the '80 SMU-UT game are my favorite in person
I was not at the game, but I remember it well. I was on an Indian guides camp out and a current member of the SMU Board of Trustees (his son was in the group) came running down the road from the top of the hill (where he had gone to get good radio reception) and sprinted off the end of the dock into the water. Made quite an impression.

beating Texas back in the SWC days, as rarely as we did it, was always my "best game" that season

The first game of the 95 season against Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. Ramon Flanigan was injuried on the opening play but we managed to win 17-14 after Ark fumbled near the goal line at the end of the game. Even though that was our only win of the season, looking back on it that was my favorite season because it was the last playing all of our natural rivals in conference.
TCU in 2005 and the Compass Bowl are on my list as well.
