SMU #13 College Campus

Post by blackoutpony »

Man, we have been getting a lot of really good pub lately. This is dope. As a Californian it was refreshing to hear one of my friends say the other day, "You know you don't always have to say Southern Methodist in Dallas when you say SMU right? SMU is a pretty well known school dude. Most everyone assumes that's the one you mean". When I was a freshmen, most people thought SMU meant Saint Mary's. FINALLY

Without our FB games being televised and our team being semi-relevant again, I'm sure most people out here would still think its Saint Mary's. Sports is such a spring board for national exposure.

SMU is on a meteoric rise. The only question is where we will eventually settle in the college landscape. Our ceiling is probably being anywhere from 30-40 in the USNWR rankings with an ever increasing applicant pool while our undergrad population grows to 7,300-7,500. I don't think we will ever be over 8,000. SMU can and should be considered a peer institution to other likewise privates in the country such as Duke, Northwestern, USC, and Vanderbilt. We are not in their class yet, but we are certainly closing that gap faster than any other school in the country. As Dallas continues to explode as one of the nation's most important and dynamic cities, SMU will continue its rise. I just hope our university leadership doesn't get complacent after this wave of construction is completed in 2015.

Quite impressive for a 'liberal arts' school (excluding business of course) that was never known for engineering.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Im glad we are on that list, but it is a strange list. Several great universities above us, but not what i would think of as great campuses - Rice, Columbia, etc.... and where is UVA - best campus in the nation in my view?

And you would almost have to try to get a worse picture of our campus - Clements Hall????? really? there are 30 better buildings to put in that photograph.

It will be really interesting to see where our applicant number goes - combining what will happen with basketball to the Bush library publicity to our academic rise.

SMU got a high ranking in the Princeton Review's list of college cities...
Uh, what? SMU is not a city.

I went to SMU and Yale. In addition to having better buildings, SMU students don't have to deal the crime that Yale students do. One year, they had an on campus gun battle that went from the equivalent of Dallas Hall to Perkins Chapel.

I too have seen SMU rise. It is so exciting. We needed this, especially with the college sport landscape changing. I hope we find a way to the top of the AAC.

With all of this good press, academics, campus stuff, city stuff, AND GOOD SPORTS... how can we be ignored?

How can you be so obtuse? Is it deliberate?

SMUfrat,

If SMU were ever able to finally get over the hump and be a truly competitive national program in football and basketball, we would see this university go places it has never been before. What's been done over the last 15 years has been done with athletics barely scratching the surface of its potential. You just have to hope we can find that transformative leader in football after Jones hangs it up and that Larry Brown gets us to where we all believe he will take us. If we can do that and our national profile continues to rise, SMU should find itself in a great position.
