Memphis has 21 on the basketball staff

Postby Rebel10 » Thu Sep 05, 2013 12:53 am

I know that a HC can only have 3 assistants and only 3 can be on the road recruiting when open recruiting periods are allowed but just because you have a large staff does not equate to national championships. Is all about the quality of the HC and his 3 assistants. The others are mostly administrative and non coaching positions. So for those that keep bring up that LB has 19 staff members so they have some type of a recruiting or winning advantage it is simply not true. Seems like those who say it are kind of saying it in backhanded kind of way to make excuses for another sport. But it does not equate to good coaching or winning a national championship or going to the final four. Pastner has not been to either as an HC and he has 21 on staff (more than LB). It's all about the HC and the quality of his 3 assistants. LB has put together a top 3 imo.

Agreed, our 4 coaches can all recruit. We also use our staff very creatively. Fball's veiled criticisms of LB & crew don't hold water. He has a program that's proactively chasing chips, and a staff that lets everyone know we're serious. Lots of depth from intern all the way to LB, training staff etc. Most everyone is picked for a reason beyond their resume skill set.. Our recruiters were born to recruit and have youth & swag on their side. Player development has guys like Snow, Lynch etc. Larry understands winning culture, not just player acquisition, based on this rebuild. Its feels like a juggernaut in training, and its intense.

That's the difference between the revenue experiences. Fball vibes islands, no contact, soft, lazy etc. At some point, it is what it is. Its not about Larry getting a 18 person staff, its about him knowing that's what this requires to build this as fast as he has. We're paying real coin to get that kind of knowledge, before you even include coaching them up, developing them etc. Hoops leaves no stone unturned, barely sleeps etc. Its the aggression, the intensity that fball needs to mimic. They don't need a legend, they need a bunch of high end foot soldiers, coordinators that run interesting systems, and a dynamic, young, aggressive, head coach.

Hopefully you do not mean football staff? Guess I am a little lost.

Be careful what you ask for, he was very against the Larry brown hire initially. :)

I don't know about others but I was certainly not criticizing LB for the size of his staff (insert joke here). I was simply drawing on it to further my point that comparing the operations of the BBall program to the Football program is apples and oranges.

To have a full football staff and a full basketball it is not really apples and oranges. As stated above LB does not have the largest staff in college and that doesn't make a difference anyway because only 3 basketball coaches can recruit. When it comes down to individual recruiting it is one on one by the assistant and the recruiting with he head coach helping. Same situation in football if the football team were to go after the number 3 player in the metroplex. It would be the recruiting coach and the recruit along with the head fball coach. In that respect it helps when you have experienced coaches that have also landed high level players. The bball team has not been to a tournament in about 20 years (UCF is not dong well in bball recruiting even thought they are going to the AAC as well) and the football team has been to 4 bowls in a row. The football a lot to sell. I think they can finish out the recruiting season strong and land a few high caliber recruits. With that being said we need to throw a knockout punch to Montana State this weekend.

I will be glass when they get the entire OOC schedule ready. I know they have 1 or 2 more games to add.

I am not saying that but just that just because he does have that size staff doesn't mean it is an edge on football. I think you misunderstood what I was saying. Reb and Hoopmanx are correct.
