Check out his record with Iowa St. before he got the job at Auburn.

Would Mike Singletary be a possible candidate or did San Fran make him damaged goods?
54 years old
Born in Texas
Played college football in Texas. (Baylor)
12-year NFL playing career
Has a Super Bowl ring
In the Pro Football Hall of Fame
Has coached as an asst and as a head coach in the NFL.
Current linebacker coach/assistant to the head coach for the Minnesota Vikings
Would run a clean program. Turner would like his clean-cut-ness.
Would be first African American SMU Head Football Coach.

But the most important question.....can he coach?

I watched him play in the 1970s-scares the hell out of me. I'd never criticize an SMU Coach again. :D

He addressed that. I honestly do not remember what he said but it was not just excuses. I am not pushing for him at all. I do not know if he would be a good fit. He does have a lot of Texas ties and a National Championship, even if it was attained with Cam and Dyer. I just thought he came across very well as he spoke. Nothing more.

The most important question is.......can he recruit? Would he fall towards the June Jones/Mike Riley side of the spectrum (coach em up philosophy, zombie-like demeanor, lightweight recruiter) or would he be more like Pete Carroll/Jim Mora (tireless recruiter, energetic player's coach). It's always tricky with these guys that don't have extensive college backgrounds.

Also, I doubt if a lot of current HS players would even know who he is since his playing career ended in '91 (IIRC).

That would be true of most candidates we may hire who stopped playing years ago.
They probably wouldn't know who the OC is at Baylor or even A&M last year.
These young HS athletes may not know who's who,
but many times their coaches and parents do.
and once they become aware of an impressive bio it can't hurt.

You are on crack if you think Kingsbury would come to SMU over his alma mater. Even if he signed up with us first, he would have bolted at the first chance.

The correct formula is what we did in basketball. We don't need a young head coach. We need someone experienced with skins on the wall to deal with the administration.

Hire an experienced head coach who has clout, and then hire young coordinators and assistants who are dynamite recruiters.

DeRuyter from Fresno, or Schiano when he gets fired from Tampa Bay. Pelini when he gets fired from Nebraska.

You're on crack if you think those guys you listed are taking anything less than P5 jobs.

Would never happen, but Jim Leavitt built South Florida from not having a program to being ranked number 2 in the nation in about 8 seasons. Turned down Alabama to stay at South Florida. He is from Texas, is still relatively young and has been working for Jim Harbaugh as the 49ers LB coach. Guy would take the job in two seconds flat. He basically is the perfect candidate....except he got fired for lying to his boss...but no NCAA violations!!!!
