Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too? When the NCAA hit Ohio State with sanctions, they also said that they would follow Tressel (who had already been fired) and keep a magnifying glass on him wherever he went. I don't wat that here!

Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?Tressel has a show cause. The end.
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?I would prefer a young, energetic HC who is a great salesman. Tressel seems like a JJ type personality to me.

Not familiar with this Texas coaching legend? Gene Stallings and Raymond Berry are two Paris High School players that made the bigtime.
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
just curious would you think Tom Landry was more the Tressel and JJ type personality? C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
Yes, I would agree that he had a no nonsense type personality like JJ and Tressel and he was a genius NFL head coach but Tom Landry never had to recruit 16-18 year olds to come play for him at a school with a poor fan support, in a weak football conference, in a city that is way more interested in pro sports, and faced with the challenge of having to beat out other instate schools with much greener pastures. We MUST get a salesman as well as a great coach to keep us in the BCS conversation. SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four

and who are the candidates you think fit that mold that SMU can get? C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
I think it is an assistant at big time program. The names have been mentioned in other threads. There are and will always be great future HCs in the pipeline. the difficulty is figuring out who they are. We've just got to hope the CofC, Hart and Turner do their research and find the right guy. This will be a sink or swim hire. The fate of our athletic department depends on it. No pressure though ![]() SMU-12 NCAA appearances, 1 Final Four

Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?And IMO, it needs to be a guy who is out front, not afraid to surround himself with quality talented assistants who have the same "always be selling" attitude. A guy and a staff who want to know every HC in the area by name and wants to develop relationships.

We also need to hope the CofC is again willing to step up to the plate and fund this new staff in the style as they did the jj hire.
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
So you don't have any specific names you like? I am not opposed to an assistant from a big time program, but I also would not oppose a proven "Larry Brown" type that may have some kind of flaw as to why he is available for SMU. The young assistant coach if he wins is gone pretty quick, but I suppose that's "a great problem to have", it's just how many diamonds in the rough home-run hires can you keep finding and replacing? It will be interesting for sure. Last edited by Insane_Pony_Posse on Mon Oct 07, 2013 3:21 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
Maybe you find a Gary Patterson type who would be happy to stay long term as long as you take care of him. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
PK lets hope so. That would be a dream come true. But I suppose it's pretty rare. The guy at Boise seems happy to stay put. PK lets put you on the search committee to find that guy that will stay at SMU even after being offered more money and a much higher profile. C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Should Jim Tressel be on our list too?
The money part has always been taken care of for Patterson by TCU matching or bettering the offers and in return Patterson has helped create TCU's higher profile. There is always the fear at TCU that one day Patterson will take the offer for the higher profile, but they have done their best to keep him there. There is never a guarantee that any new hire will be long term, so what you look for is someone who knows how to recruit and win. Then you take care of him. As I have said before there are bound to be more Art Briles and Gary Patterson types out there waiting for their chance. I don't think you really want a civil engineer like me out there looking for one of them. I would prefer someone who knows about coaches to be making that search. SMU's first president, Robert S. And plenty of Cavan's/Bennetts to wade through trying to find the home-runs. It would sure be nice if we could hit that home-run. We've sure waited long enough! C-ya @ Milos!
