Frat houses

Postby coloradoStang » Mon Nov 04, 2013 8:27 pm

Larry Brown went around to all the fraternity houses tonight during/after their chapters. He invited everyone to come out and was talking about how he wants SMU to compete for national title a lot sooner then we would believe. They have allocated 800 student tickets and will increase that if the demand is there for it. He doesn't agree with the placement of the students right now and it will change if we can have great student support.

Talked about how he really needs a strong rowdy student section because it's hard to recruit against schools like Duke and Kansas and Kentucky when they have great atmospheres. He said make no mistake we are now recruiting against those schools and he needs our help. He encourages us to take care of his kids if we see them on campus, in class, at a party. Because some of the other coaches have recruited against SMU by saying its just a white affluent school where a black kid wouldn't fit in or feel welcome said whether that's true or not he tells prospect it isn't and to not make him a liar. Last part was a joke, got some laughs. I think he was serious about making them feel welcome.

Also Said that its really hard to tell to who will start this year, we are returning 5 starters but that's not necessarily a good thing because we only won 15 games last year. Said he is planning on doing way better then that and we have a ton of great new guys coming in to help us improve on those 15 wins. Said the tall center (can't remember which one) is probably our best player and did mention that Keith Frazier is "Way behind" not sure what he meant by that. Said the team will be great and is working on chemistry because everyone thinks they are one and done, and thats the curse of having good recruits.

Talked for a bit about georgetown and how they were in a similar situation as us. Mentioned their coach (cant remember the name) and he built that program, said he wants to do that with SMU.

He also said he is working really hard to schedule some big Texas teams and some other big names but they don't want to play us right now but that will hopefully change for next season.

Larry Brown just keeps it real. Yannick Moreira is the center and Frazier was hurt for a while so he did not get to practice with them for a period of time so that might be why he is way behind. John Thompson was the Georgetown coach that turned them won a national championship.

Paying attention to details-he's knocking it out of the park
I know Matt Doherty did this often-how about June?
Very nice report btw-

June doesn't care about our community.

Coach was hilarious. He was cracking a lot of jokes, talked a lot about his past.

One of my favorite things was that he talked about how the students behaved at Kansas and UCLA, and how he hoped for us to get that way. It was important for my fraternity brothers to hear it from him. I always [deleted] at them to go to games, and I joked that hopefully after they had heard coach Brown I would never have to convince them again (I will).

Anyways it was beneficial and I think it will definitely help our attendance. I am not concerned at all with the attendance at the games at Moody minus the UCONN game.

Great to hear that LB is building a new attitude. Would love the frat's to show up in force to all games.

Are our ticket windows and ticket offices ready to handle the demand? My gut tells me there will be 500 students waiting in line outside 5 minutes to game start time and the players will wonder where everyone is.

Student tickets will be picked up in advanced, but I think you are right. There is still going to be an issue where a bunch of kids try and get tickets right before the game.

Late 90's if you wanted to sit down low you knew to get there early. Otherwise you had to sit in the rafters. They'll learn. Sounds like The Mob is taking care of some of this.

If I recall correctly. Myles Turner dropped us from his list of schools but his dad said they wanted to come to a game in Moody to see what it was like. After the past several years I think that is a very fair statement, and a full house of noisy fans could put us on the list again.

He means that Frazier lacks discipline and concentration. He's told quite a few people that Keith is way behind the learning curve and isn't picking it up like the other frosh

Man, does LB do it the right way. That is the perfect way to approach the students and with his credibility it won't go unnoticed.

I will say it again, I thought he was out of the college game too long to adjust and he might not connect. I was wrong on so many levels. So far he's done just about everything better than we could have imagined.

Didn't Thompson and Georgetown beat us by a point and go to the final four some time ago, 80s? Some of the younger fans may not know that.

Yeah something like 39-36 or 39-38 against Georgetown and Patrick Ewing. SMU lead most of the way

Georgetown 37 SMU 36

Ewing averaged 23 points a game during the 1984 Big East tournament, with a 27 point, 16 rebound performance against Syracuse in an epic title game. Yet had it not been for a forgotten play the next week against Southern Methodist in the first round of the NCAA's, the glory that awaited the Hoyas in Seattle would not have been.

SMU had controlled the first round NCAA game and kept the score low throughout. The Hoyas tied the score in the final minute 34-34, when Gene Smith was fouled with eight seconds left. Smith hit the first free throw but the second shot sailed off the rim, but Ewing's alert play tipped the ball in for a basket. SMU raced down the court and hit a jumper to narrow the count to 37-36 at the final whistle. Had Ewing not tipped the ball in, SMU might have ended the Hoyas' Final Four story before it even started.
