Larry Davis fell asleep and didn't box out. I'll never forget that.

Ewing averaged 23 points a game during the 1984 Big East tournament, with a 27 point, 16 rebound performance against Syracuse in an epic title game. Yet had it not been for a forgotten play the next week against Southern Methodist in the first round of the NCAA's, the glory that awaited the Hoyas in Seattle would not have been.
SMU had controlled the first round NCAA game and kept the score low throughout. The Hoyas tied the score in the final minute 34-34, when Gene Smith was fouled with eight seconds left. Smith hit the first free throw but the second shot sailed off the rim, but Ewing's alert play tipped the ball in for a basket. SMU raced down the court and hit a jumper to narrow the count to 37-36 at the final whistle. Had Ewing not tipped the ball in, SMU might have ended the Hoyas' Final Four story before it even started.
Thank you Stallion for that recap. Yeah, I remember the game was an intense defensive battle and Jon Koncak battled Ewing admirably. What a heartbreak though! I believe SMU was ranked as high as #2 in nation about 15 games into the season.
Beat the hell out of anybody!

Man, a good organization starts at the top. LB gets it all. Taking care of his kids (something that needed to have been said), creating a rowdy environment, etc...so refreshing. Instead of the Godfather, maybe he's Moses, leading us out of the desert.
Thanks for posting

Larry Brown should have been "the decider" in determining where the students stand. The goofballs in the carpeted offices often lack an important quality known as COMMON SENSE. Will this ever change?

I am really hoping the student turn out is big. Can´t understate the importantance for the the program to keep on its trajectory. The Godfather gets it!

I wish i was back on campus living at the franternity house so that i could go see a HOF coach just a few blocks away and see a great team featuring McD AA's and big time opponents.
We used to get jacked up for pajama party espn late-night games against Chris Herron and Fresno St. LOL
I sound like my dad right now, but you young kids don't realize how good you have it right now. Get out to Garland / Moody and support our team by making it a true home court advantage. Watch a Duke game on TV - and just do everything they do!

A silver lining to the current distribution of the students is perhaps their enthusiasm will carry over to the other fans sitting in the sections next to the students.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Although we have small fanbase, many of those fans are wealthy enough to pay big money for good seats. Giving the good seats to wealthy alums at high price points is probably the only way to maximize BB ticket revenues. While I enjoyed standing on the bleachers directly behind the visitors bench back in the day, I think sitting behind the hoops in the lower bowl would be fun.

I keep hearing about maximizing revenue. Screw that. Maximize exposure and revenue will follow. We can't continue to operate a country club sport -- open SMU athletics up to the t-shirt fan if you want to survive.

I was there that year as well and I don't think the team made it to the number 1 ranking.

SMU was not ever ranked No. 1. After a 13-1 start we were ranked No. 2 coming into a game in Lubbock against Texas Tech. The No. 1 team lost before the game and we were poised to be No. 1 but lost to Texas Tech and the team soon unraveled. I actually was there-nearly the greatest comeback in SMU basketball History.
