Can't remember if SMU was #1 or #2. I do remember they went to the Hawaiian Islands to play Chaminade, thought it was vacation time, and got beat. Never should have played that game. . . Hawaiian vacations only work for current football coaches on the Hilltop

I would've crapped my pants if I would have been at chapter dinner and LB came around. I can honestly say that I'm extremely jealous and wish I was still in college (well, for more reasons than just that :D )

We were #2 at the start of the day, then the #1 team lost in the afternoon. We played at Tech that night... all we had to do was win and we would have been #1. Stallion was probably there rooting against us, distracting us during our free throws and harassing our players. :)

That's why us old timers get a little frustrated with the administration's acceptance of failure and mediocrity. We have seen what SMU can do when it wants to be the best.

Yeah, I guess the administration views those as years when massive corruption ruled the school and embarrassed the academic reputation of the school on a national level. I think our administration wants successful men's basketball and football teams. They are aware that nothing markets a small private school better to prospective students which increases applications and allows you to raise the academic standards of the school. They just don't want to cut any corners to achieve athletic success and want to have a clean image. Problem is, if you want successful athletics you have to cheat and cut corners. The sad irony is everybody else has and will continue to cut corners

Spare me. We now must compete or get left behind. The reason we are do far behind is our school over corrected and did not change with the college football environment.

We put ourselves in a 1990 loop for 25 years and all our programs and fan base has atrophied from the neglect. We will be lucky if we get out of the slow death spiral.

The good news is that LB and the bball team may be our savior. The Godfather's quick turnaround of the basketball program and our fans' response shows how hungry our fans were for success and that they will respond when given a good product to watch.

I know Matt Doherty did this often-how about June?
Very nice report btw-

Exactly. LB is working the fan and student base. Pete Carroll did that at USC, Brian Kelly does that at ND. Stanford and Vanderbilt have revitalized their students and fans with Head FB coaches, who get their institutions, students and alums to buy in.

My sister went to ND back in the Holtz era. ND did everything possible to make the students enjoy the gameday experience.
1) The players were encouraged to get to know the regular students;
2) They didn't have the fun police out looking for underage drinking during the tailgates.
3) After the game, the team partied at a certain bar. Everyone knew where it was. We went to that bar.

Her senior year, I went to a game and had a great time despite my hatred of ND.

Is LB planning on making the rounds to the sorority houses as well? Hopefully!

Good recruiting classes combined with reaching out to the students really helps as LB is showing.

Student athletes were kinda treated as seperate are from the general student population when I was in school. Rarely would you see athletes and non-athletes hanging out. When I watch ESPN's All-Access, that doesn't appear to be the case at other schools. Hope things are different, if not, it's something that needed to be said.

It's probably getting a little better, but is still very much an issue. Coach Brown said make sure to say hello to the players and try and make friends with them. Other coaches will use the fact that we are a predominantly white affluent school against us, telling recruits that they won't fit in.

It is something that needs to be worked on, but I'm hopeful we can make some headway.

My freshman year I lived on the same floor with the incoming basketball class and I didn't feel we were isolated or special. Didn't everyone get Versace sheets?

SMU is affluent & rich, so its definitely being used against them. That said, most hoops programs at other schools aren't truly that integrated w/the student body. The hoops teams always hang together
